    Passive Surveillance
For the most part, providers, including physicians and laboratories, are required by state laws to report health conditions. For some communicable diseases, this type of passive surveillance of notifiable diseases helps identify outbreaks, epidemics, pandemics, and possible bioterrorism.
Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, review priorities in chronic disease prevention and control. Based on your research and understanding, answer the following questions:

    • Has the focus on disease  prevention and health promotion shifted from infectious diseases to chronic diseases? Why or why not?
    • Will a diversion in focus from infectious to chronic diseases leave the United States and other parts of the world at greater risk for pandemics or bioterrorism? Why or why not?
    • How do risk factors and prevention strategies differ from infectious and chronic diseases?
    • When thinking about chronic diseases, how do you perceive the purpose and utility of passive surveillance as an epidemiological tool? Explain with an example of a chronic disease surveillance system. Would you advocate the reporting of select chronic conditions? Why? Give reasons for your answer.

Task 1 – Fascell QUOTATION

Each question requires a ONE-PARAGRAPH ESSAY.

Because you are drafting, start each draft at the center of the paragraph – the proof section of the paragraph. Lay down the outside source’s words with a signal phrase first then introduce the material before it and discuss it after. As you work, edit the source material for fit your proposition/claim in response to the question. Note: This is labor-intensive writing. It will take you longer than you expect to unify each of the paragraphs around an arguable point of view.

Use the online assignment site for all three submissions.

You must use parenthetical citations that distinguishes indirect voices that appear in Young’s text.

No “drop quotes” allowed. Not using a signal phrase will lead to automatic failure of this assignment.

No “Works Cited” page required.

1) Build a paragraph around the quotation from Chapter Six, page 120. Create a topic sentence that makes the quote relevant in regards to Congress’ mood about the war in Vietnam at the time of the passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Edit the quote as you see fit including a signal phrase. Use double quotation marks on the whole quote – when words are quoted within, set those quotes off with single quotation marks. Wrap up then spending a few sentences discussing the important words and values that Fascell’s words express about how Congress thought about their responsibilities on this momentous occasion. Don’t forget the proper parenthetical citation!

“Representative Dante B. Fascell of Florida remembers [the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution] that way too: ‘The President needed the authority. Who cared about the facts of the so-called incident that would trigger this authority? So, the resolution was hammered right through everybody’”

Reilly, a sympathetic or unsympathetic figure – or a combination of the two? Is Ignatius’ mother a sympathetic or unsympathetic figure – or a combination of the two? How does the relationship between mother and son evolve during the course of the novel? What is Ignatius’ essential life dilemma as he sees it? What is the significance of Ignatius’ corpulence and his gargantuan appetite? What is the significance of Ignatius’ long-distance relationship with Myrna Minkoff? How do Ignatius’ intellectual leanings conflict with his place in the contemporary world? How does the author, John Kennedy Toole, use the ambience of New Orleans and its colloquial dialect to evoke the novel’s self-contained world? How does the novel use humor and satire to address the social concerns of the 1960s, particularly through the character of Burma Jones? What does Walker Percy mean when he writes in the Foreword that this comic novel “is also sad”? How does this text relate to current issues of interest to you and your generation?
