Week 7 Project
Hypothesis Testing is the use of statistics to determine the probability that a given claim is true.
In Part II of this project, you will choose a data set, review claims and perform hypothesis testing and make a decision. You will then complete a write-up that includes the calculations.
The government logs the number of documented births, deaths, marriages and divorces however it is possible to have undocumented cases. In part II of this project, you are going to test claims about total births, deaths, marriages and divorces.

  1. Choose a Data Set.
  2. Go to https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/nvsr.htm (Links to an external site.)
  3. In the search bar type: Births, Marriages, Divorces, and Deaths
    screenshot of CDC website toolbar
  4. Pick a DataSet and download the PDF document and make note of the volume, number, and date.  For example,
screenshot of National Vital Statistics Reports webpage
  5. Pick the same month/year combination for each data set. For example, choosing September of 2009.
    screenshot of example dataset
  6. Preliminary Calculations
  7. Create a summary table for 1. Live Births, 2. Deaths, 3. Marriages, and 4. Divorces highlighting the mean, median, sample/population standard deviation, n = number of states that submitted data for each the data sets. You will have FOUR tables using the list of values of each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico (You could have 52 numbers for each data set. You may have less data numbers if not all states/territories submitted data values.)

Summary Table for _________Mean Median Standard Deviation n (Number of States who submitted Data)

  1. Hypothesis Testing

With the information that you gather from the summary tables, test the following (you can use excel when appropriate):

  1. Determine if there is sufficient evidence to conclude the average amount of births is over 5000 in the United States and territories at the 0.05 level of significance.
  2. Determine if there is sufficient evidence to conclude the average amount of deaths is equal to 6000 in the United States and territories at the 0.10 level of significance.
  3. Determine if there is sufficient evidence to conclude the average amount of marriages is greater or equal to 2500 in the United States and territories at the .05 level of significance.
  4. Determine if there is sufficient evidence to conclude the average amount of divorces is less than or equal to 4000 in the United States and territories at the 0.10 level of significance.

For each of the tests above, in your report, be sure to—

  1. Clearly state a null and alternative hypothesis
  2. Give the value of the test statistic
  3. Report the P-Value
  4. Clearly state your conclusion (Reject the Null or Fail to Reject the Null)
  5. Explain what your conclusion means in context of the data.

4. Make your OWN Claim (You are completing ONE more Hypothesis Test)
Lastly, propose and conduct your own test of hypothesis.
a) Pick one data set: Births, Deaths, Marriages OR Divorces.
b) Write a claim about the data set.
c) For your claim—

  1. Clearly state a null and alternative hypothesis
  2. Give the value of the test statistic
  3. Report the P-Value
  4. Clearly state your conclusion (Reject the Null or Fail to Reject the Null)
  5. Explain what your conclusion means in context of the data.

Criteria
Choose a Data Set & Preliminary Data: Proficient. Student computes all 4 Preliminary Data Values.
Hypothesis Testing: Proficient. Completes 4 Hypothesis Tests highlighting the null/alternate hypothesis, value of test statistic, and report p-value.
Hypothesis Testing Analysis: Proficient. State correct conclusion (Reject/Fail to Reject) and valid explanations in context of the data for ALL 4 Problems.
Proposal and computations for new hypothesis test: Proficient. Student creates an original Hypothesis Test based on one of the data sets highlighting the null/alternate hypothesis, value of test statistic, report p-value, conclusion, and explanation.

Physics 210                                                   Homework 4                                                                 Dr. Kotowich
Directions: Answer all questions and provide full details, no work means no credit.

  • A jet is flying horizontally at an altitude of 20 km with a velocity of 2500 km/h when the engine falls off.
  1. How long does it take the engine to hit the ground?
  2. How far horizontally is the engine from where it fell off when it hits the ground?
  3. How far is the engine from the aircraft when the engine hits the ground?
  • A projectile is fired with an initial velocity of 30 m/s at 60 degrees to the horizontal. At the projectile’s highest point what is its velocity and acceleration?
  • A boy whirls a ball on a string in a horizontal circle of radius 1 m. How many revolutions per minute must the ball make if its acceleration towards the center of the circle is to have the same magnitude as the acceleration due to gravity?
  • A plane flies at a speed of 250 km/h relative to still air. There is a wind blowing at 80 km/h in the northeast direction. (That is 45 degrees to the east of north)
  1. In what direction should the plane head so as to fly due north?
  2. What is the speed of the plane relative to the ground?

Mechanics homework

well into your everyday life, describing the motion, forces and energy of ordinary experience. For everyday living, activities, sports, and amusement (such as movies and cartoons), you might take for granted exploit the rules of Mechanics of physics. Now after taking the Mechanics Class, Please select 8-10 examples where you deem the laws of mechanics are beautifully demonstrated, followed or severely misunderstood by most of people. You could also choose a small clip from a movie or cartoon, in which scenes where the laws of physics are violated. For all the examples you are presented, please describe the problems clearly. Make measurements or at least some estimated numbers, for each steps, please use physics concepts and equations to demonstrate the logic behind these examples and explain explicitly why it follows the laws of physics. For some scenes or segments in the movies/cartoons, which are not physically possible, explain thoroughly why and how. For some phenomena which are often-misinterpreted/understood by general public, first list what is wrong interpretation, and then provide the correct physics understanding of these phenomena. I would expect every example you listed will have the equations we learned from this class, and some specific calculations (can be based on estimated numbers or some specific numbers which you should cite their resources) to support why it is physically making sense or physically impossible. I have gone through some examples during the lecture, which could be used as your base line for examples.
