INTERNSHIP
An internship allows one to understand the field that one wants to pursue in life. The experiences as a volunteer from a local university were very beneficial for me as it prepared me to handle different positions around the department of athletics. The experience was fascinating and enough to mold me as I advanced in my career.
Working as an intern enabled me to understand various aspects of being a successful team player and an athletic field coach. I managed to gather different organizations that would allow me to lead them into certain types of ideas. This wave caused local sponsors to volunteer their staff and money to this event.
The first crucial thing that I learned is the importance of effective communication, which is an essential aspect of this field’s success. The individuals who are involved in this field are required to be able to multitask and support one another. This helps an individual to become flexible. I also was able to develop a professional attitude, which is very important in this field. It also gave me a perfect opportunity to network with people in various fields and various levels.
According to the servant leadership theory, the most influential leaders are servants of the people. They get their organization through wholehearted attention to the needs of the followers. Servant leadership was my best style. This is where the team comes first. This means helping the team members develop the skills they require to become successful in their careers (Northouse, 2018). This also includes deciding with the team’s best interest in mind ensuring that everyone has the required resources.
Various instances required me to show management and leadership, where I used various theories to show my efficiency. For instance, when I was given the responsibility of handling the athletic team, it was my opportunity to showing how best I was. I was committed to bringing the best out of my team. One way that I could get the best out of my team is to praise my players while in the field and recognize and celebrate wins, which is one of the best ways to help players work harder towards a larger goal as this maintains motivation and momentum. I learned that small successes over time would lead to big wins.
Similarly, I learned that how one treats the players is very important in athletics. The players must be treated with the same quantity and quality of interaction as both low and high expectancy players. Providing equal opportunities and feedback to everyone will help in unleashing hidden reserves of talents from the athletes. One must also be able to show high levels of intensity in both verbal and non-verbal behaviors. The most effective leaders act as the initial spark for urgency that all the others begin to feed off.
Applying the theories taught in class, and the field was not in any way different. This was because it has always been my wish to develop ways through my knowledge and experience as a great leader that I wish to become. I have always wanted to make new generations of leaders where, through learning and establishment of the knowledge base, individuals and organizations can make proper decisions in developing the overall scenario with the help of their knowledge (Anderson, 2018).
In surmise, I have, for a long time, tried to develop my human skills. These are skills that deal with people’s proficiency based on people’s knowledge and behaviors. This was an excellent opportunity of showing what I was capable of doing.

I would find it most challenging, finding policies and procedures to back me up before talking with Daniel’s mother to make sure it is handled professionally. Knowing that Daniel’s mother was adamant in the previous call that he stays in the program because the program is beneficial to the child. The program is about positive interactions and positive results. The number one priority would be looking out for the welfare of the child. This program would not adversely affect the child. The child only had one offense. Reviewing the rules and regulations help familiarize with the agency instructions and makes a supervisor “aware of an ethical, legal, or procedural violation that could give rise to a formal complaint or in some way harm the agency or its clients” must be efficient in using its resources (Sheafor & Horejsi, 2014, p. 537).

If I was the supervisor, I would use conceptual skills. These skills will be used to proceed with “(1) problem-solving, (2) strategic planning, and (3) creating vision” (Northouse, 2020, p. 109). Also, articulating a vision and describing it to the team stirs motivation to consider and develop effective strategies for a group or an organization can help with setting challenging goals motivates people to accomplish a mission” (Northouse, 2020, p.111, 168). Also, Having this skill “encourages one to approach situations in ways in which the entire organization works as one to achieve its goals work with others and empower “(p. 169). All my actions would be based on the standard and procedures and would not be based on personal ambiguity. A social agency must be efficient in using its resources, yet provide appropriate and adequate services to meet the needs of its clients (Sheafor, 2014, p. 45).

An analysis of the supervisor’s role in the Phoenix House is to make sure the program is running smoothly and that the supervisors and interns are doing their job. Not to be a micro-manager but to make sure they are providing the type of excellence to the clients where they leave with something new each day. When handling the Daniel case, the supervisor should have listened to Sarah and Jim concerns but also had a discussion with Daniel about what is going on and how to correct it. Daniel had a right to be in the program because his mom enrolled him in the program, she felt as though it would benefit him. This was his first time getting in trouble so there should be another consequence for the situation.
Some leadership skills that might help resolve issues in the Phoenix House is empowerment, being warm, encouragement, clarification, and advocating. These skills will go well with helping Daniel with the future of the Phoenix House because the supervisors and the intern need to provide encouragement and empowerment, they do not know what is going on and especially if it is his first time. Daniel needs to have someone advocate for him and not kick him out if he is the one being bullied.
Identify which aspect of this situation would be most challenging for you if you were the supervisor.
The aspect of this situation that would be challenging to me as the supervisor would be allowing myself and my staff to want to kick Daniel out the program. Even after speaking with staff and they have said the program is a positive aspect in his life. Also, finding out that he could be getting bullied. As the supervisor, working with the family and providing positive schooling for the students is benefit.
Finally, explain how you would use leadership skills to proceed if you were the supervisor.
Leadership skills as a supervisor should be used to create a vision, raising expectation and inspiring others to love the job they do (Northouse, 2021). As a supervisor and being that person individuals can learn from and look up to is beneficial. Staff, interns and other supervisors look up to positive influence and leadership.

Jeff Sessions told the Senate Judiciary Committee 20 years ago that affirmative action irritated people (he meant white people) because it could cause them to lose opportunities “simply because of their race.” This sense of grievance lies behind the Justice Department’s recent memo seeking lawyers to investigate “race-based discrimination” in college admissions.

It also implies that all that stands between hard-working whites and success are undeserving minorities who are doled out benefits, including seats at good schools, by reckless government agents.
In fact, today’s socioeconomic order has been significantly shaped by federally backed affirmative action for whites. The most important pieces of American social policy — the minimum wage, union rights, Social Security and even the G.I. Bill — created during and just after the Great Depression, conferred enormous benefits on whites while excluding most Southern blacks.
Southern Democrats in Congress did this by carving out occupational exclusions; empowering local officials who were hostile to black advancement to administer the policies; and preventing anti-discrimination language from appearing in social welfare programs.
New Deal and Fair Deal initiatives created a modern middle class by enabling more Americans to attend college, secure good jobs, buy houses and start businesses. But in the waning days of Jim Crow, as a result of public policy, many African-Americans were blocked from these opportunities and fell even further behind their white counterparts. The country missed the chance to build an inclusive middle class.
The congressmen from the 17 states that practiced legal segregation constituted a pivotal bloc. When Southern-led congressional committees drafted the law that created the Social Security program in 1935, they excluded maids and farmworkers, the two dominant job categories for Southern blacks and Southwestern Latinos, from the program. This denied benefits to 66 percent of African-Americans across the country, and as much as 80 percent of Southern blacks. It also disproportionately hurt Mexican- Americans.
These exclusions “reinforced the semblance of a caste system of labor in the South and Southwest,” according to a recent study by the scholar David Stoesz. “Absent a government safety net, minority workers had to work at any wage available, until they dropped.” Although the exclusions were eliminated in the 1950s, it proved difficult for these workers to catch up, since the program required at least five years of contributions before benefits could be received.
Southern legislators introduced the same job category exclusions into other New Deal laws: the Wagner Act of 1935 that helped to expand industrial unions, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 that mandated a 40-hour workweek and a minimum wage that explicitly left out agricultural and domestic workers.
 
When Congress passed the G.I. Bill in 1944 to help white veterans buy homes, attend college, get job training and start business ventures, it could have done the same for blacks. But at Southern lawmakers’ insistence, local officials administered these benefits. As a result, Southern blacks were left out, except for low-level vocational

training. The law accommodated segregation in higher education, created job ceilings imposed by local officials, and tolerated local banks’ unwillingness to approve federally insured mortgages or small-business loans for African-Americans and Latinos.
When the federal government aided home buyers with the National Housing Act of 1934, which insured private mortgages, it might also have warded off housing segregation and helped blacks purchase homes. Instead, it supported racist covenants and typically denied mortgages to blacks. This legacy persists. The median household wealth for white families, which consists primarily of equity in housing, stands today at $134,230, according to the Economic Policy Institute. But for African- American families, it is just $11,030.
The unsettling history of this affirmative action for whites significantly widened racial gaps in income, wealth and opportunity that continue to scar American life.
The anti-affirmative-action radicalism of the Justice Department’s memo is wrapped in misleading language of fair play. If pursued, it would once again deploy the power of government and the majesty of law to fortify rather than diminish the effects of the country’s long history of racial oppression.
The Justice Department’s document is more than historically ignorant. It mocks the mission and history of its own Civil Rights Division, which Attorney General William P. Rogers, a Republican, created in 1957 to fight Jim Crow restrictions on black voting.
Since then, the division has fought school segregation, enforced fair housing law and defended voting rights. So it is surreal to imagine that its authority might be deployed to weaken or eliminate policies in higher education that increase racial diversity.
Even the George W. Bush administration sought to underscore its civil rights commitments. A Bush assistant attorney general, Wan J. Kim, extolled the division’s election monitoring and Voting Rights Act enforcement lawsuits, as well as its court cases on fair lending and fair housing.
Though President Bush spoke out in 2003 to support lawsuits against affirmative action at the University of Michigan, both he and the Justice Department’s amicus brief supported the diversity rationale that the Supreme Court eventually upheld in Grutter v. Bollinger and backed last year in Fisher v. University of Texas.
“America is a diverse country, racially, economically and ethnically,” Mr. Bush said in 2003. “And our institutions of higher education should reflect our diversity.”
What the Trump administration is considering would go well beyond attempts by the Bush White House to curtail some aspects of affirmative action. By pushing back against efforts to rectify generations of racial discrimination and exclusion in colleges, the current Justice Department seems unwilling to remain within the framework that Justice Lewis Powell articulated in 1978 in University of California v. Bakke, which was

later affirmed in the Grutter and Fisher decisions. This view recognizes diversity as an appropriate and legitimate rationale for admissions policies.
Any decision to reorient the Civil Rights Division would be based on the fiction that we already possess a level playing field. Perhaps more disturbing is how such a Sessions- Trump policy would further encourage white resentment. Polls show that a near majority of Trump voters believe that actions to achieve diversity have come at the expense of whites.
Over the decades, the excluded and their allies have understood the stakes when they pushed for effective affirmative action and fought to make the social safety net available to all Americans. Properly heeded, their rallying cries would help the country’s working people across racial lines a great deal more than the race-baiting projects the Trump administration is pursuing.
