NUR 451 Chamberlain College of Nursing Operating Room Nurse Team Discussion

Please reply to this integrating a scholarly article. Currently me and my peers incorporate many of these standards in our nursing practice. Our OR makes it a priority to treat all patients equally no matter what their current situation is, their background, their race, religion, origin, etc. We take pride in treating our patients as we would want someone to treat someone in our own family. We deal with everyone from the homeless, to CEO’s. I have personally taken pride in the team that I have the pleasure of working with when I have watched them interact with the homeless man who had maggots in his leg wounds, which had crawled into the deep crevices of his body. Many would have become withdrawn and would have done the least they could have done just to get this patient out of the OR. Instead, I watched (and assisted) my fellow nurse and the OR team assigned to his room, clean this homeless man before he was emerged from anesthesia in order to give him the proper cleansing that obviously no other nurse on the floor gave him. This particular circulating nurse said, he deserves to be cleaned up, just as anyone else deserves it. I couldn’t help but think, this is what nursing is all about. The Principal Standard of the CLAS Standards is something that we strive daily to achieve, as should all healthcare facilities and nurses who are employed by these facilities.

An action that I think could be incorporated into our current practice to improve cultural competence in our organization would be that of Standard #10 which reads: “Conduct ongoing assessments of the organization’s CLAS-related activities and integrate CLAS-related measures into measurement and continuous quality improvement activities”. (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.). Currently we provide surveys to patients to ascertain their perception of the hospital experience. In these surveys, the facility could include CLAS-related questions to inquire if our facility is meeting the expectations of our customers. It is imperative to healthcare that processes are evaluated regularly. Things change often, therefore we need to ensure that we can change with those times. Saeed Mohamed et al. states that employees who strive to improve their professional achievements will help to lead to service excellence and an increase in the quality of their work (2018). These improvements can be identified and implemented through regular assessment of current practice. I believe that staff should be required to do self assessment as well as assessment of their environment of care in order to improve how we deal with a transcultural atmosphere.
