1. What are the reasons for these shortages? If the United States and other industrial nations put their resources into increasing nurse retention, would the need to recruit foreign nurses decrease? Why or why not?
- There are many reasons as to why the United States and other countries are currently experiencing nursing shortages, such as nurse burnout, aging patient populations, aging workforce, familial obligations, and violence within healthcare settings (Haddad et al., 2020). To address these shortages, the U.S and other industrial nations are opting to recruit foreign nurses rather than putting resources into increasing nursing retention, which would decrease the need for foreign recruits. By increasing nursing retention, balanced workforce distributions and fair staffing ratios can be better enforced within healthcare facilities, thus decreasing nurse turnover rates as a result of improved job satisfaction. This is why the need for foreign recruits would decrease.
Choose one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and discuss how a community nurse can work toward achieving that goal.
- Reducing inequalities is one of the Sustainable Development Goals that a community nurse can work towards achieving. Issues such as institutional racism and inaccessibility/unaffordability all contribute to healthcare inequalities that negatively impact disenfranchised populations. The community nurse can become a patient advocate by raising awareness of these issues and aiding in lobbying efforts to promote equality within healthcare, thus improving public health.
2. Nursing shortage has become one of the main concerns of health industry. The fact that United States is running short with nurses puts patients in danger due to errors, higher morbidity, and mortality rates. Nurses face burnout and frustration in hospitals with high patient-to-nurse ratios, and patients experience greater mortality and failure-to-rescue rates than in hospitals with lower patient-to-nurse ratios. Therefore, U.S decided to recruit nurses from other countries. Per the article U.S Healthcare Groups Urge Approval of International Nurse Immigration, “At least 5,000 nurses from other countries have been approved to work in U.S and are awaiting immigration” (Basen, 2021).
What are the reasons for these shortages? If the United States and other industrial nations put their resources into increasing nurse retention, would the need to recruit foreign nurses decrease? Why or why not?
The reason why United States is facing nursing shortage is due to insufficiency education, high turnover, and unfair workforce. If the United States and other industrial nations put their resources into increasing nurse retention, I think it could prevent nurses from resigning at some point because it will help support clinical decision making, establish a hiring standard, adopt a structured competency nurse residency program that could help nurses be more satisfied in their profession (Haddad, 2020). But those nurses who get into nursing field to make more money won’t last long due to the amount of stress they are under, especially when they don’t really care about their job, all they care about is the amount of money they make. In order to be successful in health care field you have to love your job and care for people.
Choose one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and discuss how a community nurse can work toward achieving that goal.
One of the Sustainable Development Goals I chose is Zero Hunger. As a nurse, we think globally, care for the health of our people and work hard to make the world a better place each day. One-way nurses can work together to end hunger is by reaching Minimum Date Set to improve access to education, general quality, and maternal and children health initiatives in addition to combating infectious and vector-transmitted disease (NursingALD.Com – Global Sustainable Development 2015- 2030, 2020). As we all know having and education will prevent homelessness, hunger and help us make the right decisions in our life.
