Healthcare diversity needs requires the nurse to incorporate concepts of culturally relevant health care communication and interventions (aacn, 2011). This is to ensure that health care services meet the demands of an increasingly diverse healthcare population which differs in “cultural and ethnic identity, socio-economic status, emotional and spiritual needs and the values of the patients” (aacn, 2011).

Cultural sensitivity is an important affective competency. Affective domain competencies relate to moral reasoning, ethical decision making and the development of a personal belief system which guides nurses to make sound judgments and equal care for all patients (Maier-Loventz, 1999). As such, nurse educators should incorporate health care diversity as a main component in the affective teaching and competency.
