School nurses are important in linking healthcare and education through leadership, community/public health, care coordination, and quality improvement (NASN, 2018). School nursing is interesting because, it allows a nurse to work with children and their families in the community setting. What is also interesting is continuity of care over a long period of time vs that of an inpatient stay. The National School Nurse Associations Position Statement (2018), is as follows, “The school nurse strives to promote health equity, assisting students and families in connecting with healthcare services, financial resources, shelter, food, and health promotion; Support the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process; Addresses the social determinants of health, such as income, housing, transportation, employment, access to health insurance, and environmental health; Often the only healthcare professional aware of all the services and agencies involved in a student’s care.” One of the primary roles of the school nurse is community health promotion and disease prevention (Wold & Selekman, 2013).
