Wk3- My Rites

Assignment Directions:

Social Scientists of religion believe in the functionalist approach to religion- that is, they want to look at how ritual functions in the lives of those who participate in them. They believe that ritual serves important social and psychological functions.

For this class presentation, I want you to reflect on the everyday rituals that you have participated in or plan on participating in. After reading the e-lecture on “Sacred Ritual”, put together a PowerPoint presentation of examples of rituals in your life. This is going to take a bit a reflection and critical thinking, but I want an example, based on the e-lecture, of Life-Cycle Rites and Calendar or Seasonal Rituals. For example, Quinceañera would be an example of a life-cycle rite, but you need to identify exactly what kind, which would be “social puberty”. Marriage would be another example. An example of a calendar or seasonal ritual would be the celebration of Christmas.

Submit a PowerPoint with graphics and pictures of your ritual example.
