1) Outline the main dimensions of realism, liberalism, and constructivism –
outlining how they each see interests, interactions, and institutions. Briefly
discuss how they would be useful for understanding foreign policy of states in
general. Then, choose a foreign policy decision of a state involving two or more
states, or an international development involving an international institution
from the past or present (an example that falls under either of these categories
is fine). Briefly explain this international issue from the perspective of ONE of
these three theories.

2) Outline the core concepts/parts of the Rational Actor Model (RAM). What are
some of the assumptions made by this approach? How can we apply the RAM
to foreign policy? Substantiate your answer using at least one specific example
from class or in readings, or another foreign policy example you can think of.
Finally, mention some shortcomings of this model that you can think of. Is this
model useful on its own in foreign policy? Or are other models needed? (Hint:
The Cuban Missile Crisis) Why or why not?

3) What is the democratic peace theory/argument? Outline the different causal
paths of this “democratic peace” in detail (how and why this democratic peace
comes about). Refer to the lecture/video shown in the lecture. Make sure to
mention how the concept “accountability” matters. Does it main democracies
never fight wars? Why or why not? Be specific.
