Hinds Community College Civil Disobedience Paper

Introduction

The idea of Civil Disobedience put forth by writers like Henry David Thoreau and exemplified by activists like Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass, to name a few mentioned in this module, are not simply theories of the past; they are still very relevant to American society today.

Directions

For this assignment, you are going to EITHER write a 500-word essay OR create a 5 to 7 slide Power Point that discusses how civil disobedience can still be seen in America “today” (for the purposes of clarity, “today” can refer to any time period between 2000 and now.)

In your response, be sure to address the following:

Provide a clear definition of civil disobedience as outlined by Thoreau

Give relevant background information regarding the modern day example

Explain HOW the modern day (within the past 21 years) example illustrates the elements of civil disobedience as outlined by Thoreau and, possibly, other adherents of this philosophy — Gandhi, MLK, etc.

Cite any sources used, including the textbook and secondary sources you will likely need to give the information listed above.

For either submission type, you will need a Works Cited or References page (see example of how I did this in “The Fight for Equality” Power Point from this week’s module)

If your submission lacks a Works Cited or References page, you are likely to receive a “0” for the assignment.

Additional Considerations

Please make sure to review your similarity % to avoid any hint of plagiarism, particularly because this essay is part of the “Major Assignments” category.

  • If you are unsure as to what an appropriate similarity % should be, review the Plagiarism and Turnitin page from the “Getting Started” module.
  • If you are writing the essay, please make sure the document reaches the 500 – word minimum, or additional points will be deducted.
  • If you are creating a Power Point, please do not simply submit text – only slides – make it a true presentation with engaging graphics and a smooth flow (have fun with it!). Also, be sure to adhere to the minimum slide count (5 to 7); any Power Point that does not have the minimum number of slides with information on each will have additional points deducted.
