Directions: Choose one of the following essay questions given below and answer it in a full-length essay. This essay should be two to three pages long and double spaced in MLA format.

1. Look closely at a work by Alexander Calder. Would a Classical sculptor (Rodin, Michelangelo) have recognized Calder’s work as “sculpture”? Why is it considered modern sculpture? What makes it different from traditional concepts of sculpture?

2. Discuss the musical and social contributions of one of the following: Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, or Count Basie. You will need to do some online research. Cite sources correctly!

3. Find a web site about the post-modern architect Frank Gehry; make sure it includes pictures of his Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, as well as the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Write a review of Gehry’s architectural career, selecting at least three of his buildings which you feel illustrate the principles/characteristics of post-modern architecture. You are encouraged to attach images in an appendix at the end of your paper.
