Indiana Bloomington US Intervention in Latin American Politics Discussion
Starting in the mid-twentieth century, the United States became heavily involved in Latin America. The actions of the US government affected the lives of Latin Americans in countless ways. For this last essay, you will use Oscar Wao, a fiction book very much grounded in history. You will also use documents from our lectures on Operation Condor, Dirty Wars, NAFTA, FARC, and the Northern Triangle.
Here’s the prompt:
How and why did the US intervene in Latin American politics and what were the long term effects of these interventions both in Latin America and the United States.
Things to consider:
Land, Cold War, dictators, foreign companies, immigration (challenges faced on their way north and also sociopolitical challenges faced by first/second generation Latinos).
Friendly reminders:
This is NOT a book review. What you will do is take two to three concepts discussed in the book and elaborate on these themes by using documents from our course. The most obvious one is the Trujillo dictatorship. You could discuss how he came to power, the atrocities committed, and how that created an exodus from the Dominican Republic. We have discussed multiple examples of the US carrying out similar missions in Latin America and similar consequences (ie violence and immigration) playing out in the region.
This will be a five-page paper with Chicago Style footnotes. This is the last assignment of the semester so I will be checking much more closely for grammatical errors. Make sure you proofread and polish your footnotes.
once assignment is matched with a tutor I will upload the documents from the lecture needed for the paper
