As a teacher Observations are one of the many ways, we identify childrens needs and strengths through observation. We can see where they might need more support. Observations are great for helping us understand the child and their various behaviors because when we take time to sit watch and note things that the child is doing just as it’s happening and think more about what’s happening that facilitate how we can get knowledge about that child. Observing children can also help us to understand if the child’s have difficulties, they can come in and ask for help from us when they need help. Observing children can also help us to understand what part of everyday child development is and what might be a mental health difficulty. Observations allow us to understand what activities interest them, and how they respond to certain activities. Observing how the Childs express themselves freely through play by using their body movement, language, and facial expressions. As well as we focus how they communicate and interact with other kids and teacher, and being able share with other kids during play, also being able to take turn. Noticing children can moving easily from one center to the next. In addition we concentrate about how they can handle buttons, zipper and snaps, also how can dressing and undressing independently.

  1. Discuss with others what you see as the challenge of making good observations in early childhood settings.

I think the challenge of making good observations in early childhood settings is to identify the issues and the causes children may be experiencing. The informal observation is to observe a child and really pay attention to their actions. For example, if a child is isolated and always likes to play alone there may be a reason why they are doing this. It is best to not make assumptions but rather observe their mood. The informal observation method is to figure out the causes of the isolation in this particular situation. It could be for numerous reasons such as them encountering bullying, health issues, or even enjoying their own company. It would take a few days of informal observation to have an idea of the situation. Talking and asking questions with the child would help to get information. Formal observation is noting and recording the information that you see a child doing. For instance, if there is a child that is noticeably experiencing distress, this type of information would be written down after the informal observation. Also, it is important to make sure that the child is provided with the necessary resources or help. I think these two approaches are very important when learning about child behavior, and I have now learned how to differentiate these behaviors. Another thing that I liked about the formal observation is that when observers take notes and document events, they can later look back on those impressions and see if the same child may be experiencing similar or different actions as before.
