MUSIC 111 Los Angeles Valley College The Romantic Era of Music Discussion

Now that you are firmly in the modern era, imagine that you could actually travel back to an earlier era and experience the way of life and the music. Wow! Think of the possibilities. Let your imagination embrace the unbridled enthusiasm of such an opportunity.

Based on what you have read in Time Traveler Through Music about the way of life in Europe, to which era would you like to travel back: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or early Modern? Why? Make sure to address issues relating to matters political, social, and cultural. What intrigues you about daily life in your chosen era? Of course, each of these eras will offer challenges for the twenty-first-century traveler: no internet, no mobile phone, none of the comforts of modern life. But you will find so many positives as the norm, too: artisan craftsmanship, food unblemished by preservatives, opportunities for real conversation.

A word of advice: the above part of the prompt deals with the non-musical aspects of society – politics, society, daily living, etc. You will address music in the second part of this assignment, which you find below.

During your excursion back in time, you will have the opportunity to experience live performances of the music from that time. Referring to the music from the book, which two pieces of music from your chosen time period would you like to hear? Why? Be specific. (Remember that these may not be your favorite pieces, but works that have some historical, social, or cultural significance.) Your two pieces MUST come from the time period you plan to visit.

You might approach this as if you have just returned from your “blast to the past” and now regale both family and friends with stories of your time travel experience.

To get full credit: Post a three- to four-paragraph response to this discussion prompt. Again, be as specific as you can, referencing pieces of music, composers, historical events, musical elements.
