UOTP Crisis Management Discussion Responses

Discussion question for the week.

  • How does coordinating agencies differ in a crisis, disaster, and an emergency? How do you know who is in charge for each occurrence?  A good source is FEMA.gov ICS.

POST #1: Coordinating agencies during different types of situations varies based on the criteria or incidents involved. For example during a crisis at a casino the security department there may be best equipped to lead the response because they know the location and the demographic of the area and its residents. A disaster is more complex and would likely require a larger response than a singular security team. A disaster should be a collective effort to respond from government agencies such as FEMA or DOD and local agencies like the local police, fire and paramedics. Support for the response can be supplemented by security personnel or even residents of the town where the incident occurred because they know the area and members of the community that are likely affected by the incident or may suffer as a result of the incident. The best way to know who is in charge is to follow the guidance in Incident Command Systems or Incident Command Plans. The agency responsible for the resources affected by the incident should lead the response. For example, if the transportation and communication systems are rendered inoperable, it would make sense for the incident Commander for the communication system to be in charge of the response. Or if the transportation systems are rendered inoperable it would not make sense for a dispatcher to be in charge of the response.

POST #2: It is essential to stablish a good risk plan. The main reason is because a cost must be identified and most importantly the people can be aware of what to do in case of an emergency and they can also react accordingly. The property should be prepared for extreme emergent factors and situations, such as climates, active shooters etc. All are essential to risk management.  Therefore, the safety and well-being of the people inside the building should be maintained as well.  The purpose of an emergency plan is to have a prepared plan and decrease panicking.  People that are prepared, organized, and calm will have a better chance of remaining safe during an emergency.  Having the people and the building ready before, during, and after a disaster will help reduce costs, injuries, and property damages. With that being said, is exactly why it is extremely important to have a plan this is also because the consequences can be detrimental. Poor risk management can lead to fatalities, and extremely high cost in repairs, compensations, all these can be avoided it planned for is done ahead. Also, it is safe to say that having a risk management plan can be potentially expensive as well this is why it is important to detail every cost and cut on things that may not be that important. for example, some insurances have tornados coverage but, in some areas, they are not necessary because they don’t occur there however, flooding are a thing.
