BIO 101 University of Maryland HIV & Sickle Cell Genetic Disorders Discussion

 

I’m working on a biology discussion question and need support to help me study.

Genetic disorders range from mild to intense, and from highly probable to fairly unlikely (in terms of passing the disorder along). They can be traumatic and life-altering and other times we may not even know they are there or may add to the diversity of our society. Technology and health care are making advancements daily and one of the forefronts of research is to how to “fix” these genetic disorders/diseases by altering one’s DNA. Editing genetic information via CRISPR/Cas9 is making significant headway in the treatment of cancer, HIV, sickle-cell, and more, but one has to wonder as well, what other ways could this technology be used?

Please discuss how these gene editing advancements may be of benefit to our society yet also create new dilemmas. What could it mean for the human race to be able to cure cancer, Parkinson’s, HIV, etc? Should all genetic disorders be eradicated from our society, especially those that may not be deadly but create differences between us? How do you decide which genes should be altered? Should all unsavory genes be altered? What could this lead to in terms of editing genetic make-up to create an ideal human? How do we determine which genes are ideal and kept vs which are modified? Are there currently any guidelines in the US to help scientists stay within certain parameters?
