UCF The Measure of The Change in Heat Energy Analysis

I’m trying to study for my Chemistry course and I need some help to understand this question.

Objective: State the aim of the experiment in your own words, usually around 2-4 sentences. A clear statement of the overall purpose for performing the experiment. For example, what is / are the goal(s) to be achieved and what idea(s) are you to learn during the duration of the project?

In this Part 2 of the project, you will perform at least TWO different reactions (1 acid and base and 1 redox using different reagents) and measure their enthalpies. You will need to collect two trials for each reaction. You will collect the data using commercial calorimeter (one trial) and coffee cup calorimeter (one trial) for each type of reaction. You are encouraged to perform more reactions if time permits. (Try out dissolution process).

1. Acid and Base

When determining the amounts of acid and base to use, make sure you check the mole ration between the acid and base to ensure a complete reaction.

CH3COOH + NaOH → NaCH3COO + H2O

HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O

H2SO4 + 2 NaOH → Na2SO4 + 2 H2O

2. Redox reaction:

Create a redox reaction using different metals and solutions provided in the lab.

Zn + 2 HCl → ZnCl2 + 3 H2

Zn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2

3. Dissolution process:

Try dissolving NH4Cl or metal solids in water to see if you can measure the thermal energy associated with them.
