ANTH 270 University of Michigan The History of Ancient Empires Questions

For this assignment, you need to answer THREE of the essay questions given below. Each answer should be 350-450 words long (with a maximum of 500 words per answer). The exam is open book and open note. The expectation is that you will base your answer on course content and draw on (and properly cite) course materials in your answers; instructions on citation can be found at the base of this exam. Answers that do not draw on course content will receive lower scores.

CHOOSE THREE OUT OF THESE FOUR QUESTIONS TO ANSWER

  1. Describe religion and leadership in the Early Dynastic (Sumerian) and Akkadian periods. How did the relationship between leadership positions and religion change over time?
  2. In what ways were the Akkadian Empire’s political, economic and ideological strategies shaped by the very nature of the Sumerian city-states that they were attempting to control? Were they able to completely change the culture and values of Mesopotamian city-states?
  3. Describe Early Dynastic (Sumerian) cities. What kinds of features did they have and how were they organized? How did cities reflect the social, economic, religious and political nature of society during this period?
  4. Compare and contrast the Akkadian Empire, the Old Babylonian Empire, and the Achaemenid (Persian) Empire. In what ways did the large scale of the Achaemenid (Persian) Empire influence their use of different imperial strategies?
