Instructions

Overview

Write a persuasive essay on one of the following topics that employs logos, ethos, and pathos (Links to an external site.) to make an argument for a particular side. The essay should also acknowledge the opposing viewpoint in order to present counter-arguments. Unlike the compare and contrast essay, the persuasive essay should employ vivid (yet still academic) language to help support the writer’s particular point of view. No outside sources may be used for this assignment.

Tasks

  • Can online learning replace traditional learning?
  • Should sex education be required for all middle school students across the United States?
  • Should the United States require all citizens to perform yearly volunteer work/community service?
  • What is a significant change that should be implemented in your particular place of employment and why? (First-person will be allowed for this prompt.)

Length:

  • Minimum 500 words for the first draft.
  • Final draft must be 5-6 pages.

Format:

  • Essay must be written in the 3rd person with the exception of the fourth prompt.
  • If choosing the fourth prompt (what is a significant change that should be implemented in your particular place of employment and why?), then 1st person pronouns will be accepted.

All drafts of the essay (rough and final) should be formatted according to appropriate MLA guidelines. Refer to the handout on MLA General Format.
