Colorado Mountain College Music Writing Question
GUIDELINES:
must be 2 page(s), typed, double—spaced, 12-point font max.
Your paper should have three sections; each section must be identified with the following subheadings.
A) Summary: briefly summarize the main point/issue/topic of your option.
B) Relationship to the Course Material: how was what you observed related to key concepts, issues, reading materials, videos or lecture materials covered in class.
C) Your reaction/evaluation: This section is most critical as it is your opportunity to reflect on your experience. Discuss what you learned, how you felt, whether you agree or disagree, strengths or weaknesses of what was presented, etc.
PAPER 1:
Write about a music: is an integral form of cultural expression. As a medium of expression on topics that range from social change, inequality, sexuality, relationships, family, injustice, and politics, music in many ways acts as a mirror of, as well as a commentary on, society. For this option, interpret the lyrics from any two songs and discuss how they reflect and relate to a specific aspect of this course (ex. culture, relationships, conflict theory, alienation, poverty, crime, racism, etc.). Any type of music is acceptable — the songs you choose need not be all the same style of artist. Include the lyrics pertinent to your discussion. Each discussion should include an interpretation of the artist’s message and clear application of specific course materials.
PAPER 2:
Write an analysis of a movie or video that relates to this course. You may NOT use films that are shown in class. Your task is to look critically at the movie’s intended message, the support offered and an analysis of the findings/conclusions. Examine the development of characters and their relationships. Begin with a summary of the movie (one paragraph – I’m not interested in a movie review): then proceed to an analysis of the work. You are welcome to include your opinion of the work but remember that your opinion should be a minor piece to your overall paper.
