Purpose: To evaluate and examine global culture and society through a varied exploration of research topics

Skills/knowledge practiced: Textual analysis; close reading; writing with citations; use of textual evidence; developing argument; following proper MLA formatting guidelines; paraphrasing quotes; analysis of global culture and politics

Submission instructions: Please submit your 250-350 word response as a Word doc on Blackboard (no paper copies will be accepted). Every submission should include at least one quote from the text.

Grades will be based on the completeness of your submission (including textual quotes + sufficient word count length) as well as proper grammar/spelling and the depth of your critical analysis. Four points total:

Assignments should be formatted as follows: 12 pt. font, 1-inch margins, double-spaced with header, page numbers, Times New Roman font, Word Count listed, Works Cited page on separate page, submitted as Microsoft Word or PDF. Option 1: Solitary confinement is a widely used practice in the United State and across the world and has become widely criticized as an inhumane practice as it is sometimes substituted in place of the death penalty when the latter is outlawed in the country. With this in mind, from a humane point of view, discuss the ethical/moral implications with placing individuals in solitary confinement.

Option 2: After considering the limitations presented to Palestinian refugees being restricted from going back to their home countries due to the political negotiation with Israel and the lack of human rights and refugee protection from the UN, where would you go in this situation and what would you do if you were rejected as a refugee? Were you aware of these restrictions? How does this make you feel? Furthermore, if you were in danger every day, would you stay in a war-torn country or try to escape? Why?
