Writing Homework Help

Valencia College The Sleeping Stones by Jack Trammell Analytical Review

*For this assignment, you will choose to apply a genre to a literary text, both of your choosing. You will choose only one genre and one text to discuss. Texts to consider may be any of the short stories we have covered in the course so far, or you may analyze a novel, poem, play, film, television show, video game, or outside short story. This research paper will be a study of the particular genre and an evaluation of how the “text” is an example of that genre through a discussion of at least three genre characteristics. This application is discussed in more detail in section B below.

*Some genres to consider include: Documentary, War Films, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Romantic Comedy, Horror, Superhero, Mob/Crime, Film Noir, Sports, etc. Avoid overly vague genres, such as Drama, Comedy, Action, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, etc. as these have characteristics that cross into other genres or are too vague to be of use.

*You will need to construct at least a five page (minimum) essay that fully supports your thesis. This paper requires the use of at least three to five sources with a works cited page for the text (primary) and the three to five outside/critical/secondary sources. The fictional text does not count as one of the three to five secondary sources. As for these outside/secondary/critic sources: there must be at least one database source, one book (ebook) source, and one credible website.

Assignment Guidelines

A) Include an analytic introduction and conclusion and at least three sections that address the genre characteristics and specific details in the film. The introduction will provide a brief overview of the genre, a brief setup of the film, and the thesis statement. The organization of the essay and thesis are discussed in the module resources.

B) The major sections (one or more paragraphs per section) of the essay will connect the genre to the film through at least three genre characteristics (each characteristic will be its own section of the paper). For example, Spider-Man: Homecoming can be connected to the superhero genre through the use of a tragic origin, a secret identity, and a villain who used to be a friend or a mentor. In this case, you would identify the major characteristic of the section in the FOCUS, setup the genre/characteristic in the CONTEXT, provide specific examples of the characteristic through specific film details in the EVIDENCE, and discuss their significance for the genre in the ANALYSIS.

C) Each body paragraph should have a strong topic sentence that outlines the claim of the paragraph, a narrowing to the specific focus/issue of the paragraph, an illustration of the concept from the text (textual evidence/quotes in MLA documentation), and your analysis of how the quote explicates the concept. Think about Focus, Context, Evidence, and Analysis and the breakdown in B) above.

D) This paper requires the use of three to five outside, critical sources. These sources may be either based on the text (criticism or reviews) or the historical and contextual information on the genre. You will probably need at least two sources on the genre and two to three sources on the text. These sources will be used in the sections to provided information about the genre or build upon the interpretation of the text. You will mostly likely have two quotes per body paragraph sections. Finally, do not forget to create a works cited page for this essay that includes a citations for all sources.

E) As part of your three to five research sources, you will need at least one book (print or ebook) and one database source from the Valencia online database. Also remember that the fictional text under review is not part of the three to five research sources, but you will still need to cite from it in your paper and also cite it in the Works Cited page.

While you may use credible websites (there is a list in the module), you may not use Wikipedia, Sparknotes, CliffNotes, Bookrags, etc., ehow, about.com, etc., or any prezi or powerpoint documents. If you quote or cite from any of the above sources, or sources like them, I will not consider it a source when grading the essay. If you have questions about a source’s credibility, please contact me.

F) This paper requires the use of direct quotes from the sources in the essay (you may use at most two paraphrase or summaries of sources, as well). If you do not quote from the research sources and the fictional text, you will receive a zero (0) for the essay as it does not meet the criteria of a research paper. Also, if you have a source listed in the Works Cited page, but it is not used in the essay, there will be graded reduction for inappropriate source use.
