PRST 1010 University of Missouri Personal Leisure Philosophy Paper

In lieu of a final exam, you will complete this CYOA research topic paper. For this paper you will:

  • Determine what your personal leisure philosophy will be. Not sure what is a leisure philosophy? Check out chapter 10 (p. 247) in your textbook for a listing of seven operational philosophies. You might select one of these, or you might blend some of these philosophies into your own. The key here is to establish a lens that you will use to examine your research topic.
  • Then you will pick a contemporary issue within one of the PRST emphasis areas that you are interested in. For instance, you might want to further explore the dynamic of COVID-19 and tourism.
  • Once you have chosen your contemporary issue and emphasis area, you will source scholarly/academic articles on that topic.
  • After reading them, you will integrate the academic information you have learned (facts, figures, theories, etc.) into a 3-page paper discussing the contemporary issue’s significance in your chosen emphasis area while also discussing the topic from the point of view of your personal leisure philosophy.

If you are having trouble coming up with a contemporary issue to focus on, reach out to me for a one-on-one brainstorming session.

Use the MU library to search for several scholarly research articles that examine or discuss your chosen contemporary issue within your chosen emphasis area. If you are having a hard time selecting a journal to search, you can start here with the Parks, Recreation, Sport and Tourism basic research guide (Links to an external site.) provided by the PRST Subject Librarian Noël Kopriva.

Read the articles, think about them, and relate them to what you have learned this semester and to your personal leisure philosophy, and write a three page paper

Note: These research papers are not a personal narrative using first person, nor is it a report on your findings about your topic. Instead, it is a piece of writing that requires a more abstract, critical, and thoughtful level of inquiry.

Writing a strong research paper means you have familiarized yourself with the writing of experts on your chosen topic (through your scholarly articles), and then compared their opinions, findings, etc., with your own thinking (your personal leisure philosophy and what you have learned during this course). So, you will need to refer to (quote, even) your expert sources to support a claim (or thesis) you make about your topic. Your job is to integrate evidence and your personal insights and connect these to your own assertion of a personal philosophy of leisure.
