DCTC The Exploration of Attachment Theory Discussion

1) Listen to the Chapter 5 Early Childhood Social-Emotional Development (Lifespan) and respond to the embedded lecture discussion questions. Make this the first part of your thread post.

2) Attachment

  • As discussed in the lecture, an assimilation of Harlow’s study can be seen here: Harlow’s Monkey Study . Results from the study showed baby monkeys would spend the majority of the time on the cloth/soft monkey, and only go to the wire monkey for food. This resulted in the conclusion that attachment in the form of physical contact was as important (maybe even more important) than physical nourishment. Share any reflections or questions you have.
  • Watch the Strange Situation experiment from the following link Attachment & Strange Situation (Ch. 5) and Bobo Doll Study (Ch. 7) (the strange situation is the first 8 minutes). Post any reflections or questions you have about the attachment types and associated outcomes.
  • Consider the topic of temperament we discussed from Chapter 3 of the text. In what way could the attachment relationship be influenced by a baby’s temperament? In other words, do you think the temperament style of a child influences the attachment relationship in any way? Explain your response.
  • Adult Attachment Interview link (Ch. 5) (optional): As mentioned in the lecture, the AAI is something intended to help with understanding our attachment style as adults. This link is provided for your own interest, or in the event you decide to write about this topic in your Cumulative Learning Essay. Students are not required to take this assessment or share the results as part of discussion. Ask questions here if you think it is helpful.

3) Gender Identity Development

Watch Sam Killerman (Gender Identity Ted Talk) . What do you find most interesting? Do the ideas presented by Sam align with the concept Gender Schema Theory? Explain your response. Ask questions as helpful.
