3.Social Policy

Social policy is the area of public policy that the government utilizes to help improve or maintain the well-being of the citizens and residents of the United States. At the beginning of the country, this type of policy mostly focused on protecting property owners’ rights and policies to help expand and promote the population of the United States. There were some social policies in place to help veterans of war and widowed mothers. However, most charity was handled by private philanthropists or religious institutions. During and after the Great Depression, that all fundamentally changed. Franklin D Roosevelt worked to enact numerous laws and policies that would promote the well-being of struggling Americans.

FDR was very worried about the economy – but he approached the issues of the Great Depression by working to lift up people who were struggling financially through passing things such as the Social Security Act, the National Recovery Administration, Civilian Conservation Corps, and Aid to Families with Dependent Children to name a few. Lyndon B. Johnson followed up and added more programs, as did nearly every president after him. Now, in modern times, we take these programs for granted… as though they have always existed. Yet, even as recently as 2010, America saw a major new social policy created through the PPACA or the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – colloquially known as Obamacare. As we move forward through time, more social policies are sure to be created and placed into action to continue to help American citizens and residents.

Information to help you understand social policy will be found in Chapter 16 of your textbook.

In order to take your accumulating knowledge of government “out of the classroom,” and place it into the world around you, you must begin analyzing and applying government content to contemporary news issues (within the last 3 months) in U.S. government and politics. The article cannot be an opinion piece, blog, or other personalized editorial and must be a reporting article. You will need to read an article having something to do with a Social Policy in the US and then discuss it using the following prompt.

For this week’s current event discussion, you can choose a news article about a Social Policy in the United States government.

In your original post you must:

1. Provide the title of the article, URL, publication date, and a 50+ word summary of the article in your own words.

2. Describe what the article explicitly has to do with either Political Parties or Elections in relation to the United States government in 50+ words.

3. What are your thoughts and feelings after reading this article?

What is social policy? A plan of action implemented by government, business, or civil society for the purpose of influencing the structure of society, the distribution of resources in society, or the working of social institutions such as government, family culture, health care, education, or markets.

Obamacare was created 10 years ago for the people that couldn’t afford (low-income people) Medicaid. Former President Obama helped people between the ages of 18 and 64 that were not insured to be a benefit from the program. However, when Obamacare was approved by the Supreme Court about 13.3% of adults Americans fell and no longer could afford Obamacare.

Between the years 2013-2019 about 13 million Americans have been increased with Medicaid enrollment.

When the pandemic hit in 2020 Obamacare took action to help low-income Americans be prepared so they can take the COVID-19 tests without paying for them. Now that the vaccine is out, Medicaid still offers to pay for insurance for low-income people.
