EEC 3318 Rasmussen College Differentiated Instruction Activity Plan Discussion

Follow the directions on the Activity Plan for Differentiated Instruction and complete in its entirety using complete sentences and paragraphs. Submit all three completed differentiated activity plans. Include an APA formatted title page and reference page, as well as, in-text citation, if/where appropriate. To differentiate instruction, educators will consider the following:

Content

(What)

Let’s start with differentiated content. Because most preschool settings allow children to make choices and practice concepts in a variety of ways, differentiating content supports learners at all ability levels. For children with a great deal of prior knowledge on a topic, the educator can add to the content of the unit or encourage the child to explore concepts in more depth, allowing this child’s extensions to his/her learning.

Process

(How)

Another way to differentiate instruction is through the process of instructing. Educators who are knowledgeable about the learners in their program are good at planning instruction so that the process of learning is tailored to a variety of learning differences. This is just another way to tailor instruction to the specific learners.

Product

(What is learned)

A third way to differentiate instruction is through the product that learners use to show mastery of a concept. Great educators allow learners to demonstrate their understanding in a variety of ways. This means using diverse strategies to collect artifacts that represent new knowledge. This is a big part of the Reggio Emilia approach because children are allowed to demonstrate their understanding of a new skill in a way that they have selected.

Environment

(Where)

Many teachers don’t think about the impact of the environment on learning, but it can have a profound effect on children’s ability to learn. Thinking about the actual classroom layout, flexible grouping of children, how the classroom feels (otherwise referred to as the classroom climate) and how to connect school to the home as well as the community, is a final way to differentiate instruction.

Guiding Questions:

What are other materials that can be provided that will still help a child meet the goal and objective?

What alternative methods can be used to teach about the topic or concept to ensure that all children are making connections?

Other than the “typical” assessment (artwork, writing samples, etc) what are ways that a child might exhibit that he/she has mastered the lesson objectives?

Does that space in which you have chosen to do the activity support how the children are experiencing the activity?

Please submit one adapted plan for each age group (3 pages total). You may take the plans that have already been submitted and add the differentiated learning adaptations to them and resubmit. Please incorporate any instructor feedback received into these plans. Use an APA formatted title and reference pages as well as in text citation where appropriate.
