ENG 104 Onondaga Community College Racial Identity Poems Analytical Essay

 

For this assignment, you will write a three-page analysis of at least two of the poems we read in Unit 1. The list of poems can be found in Week 2 of Unit 1.

For the poems you choose, answer one of the following research questions:

This is America: How do the imagery, tone, persona, language use, form, or any combination of these in the poems support/develop their themes about American life or identity?

Racial Identity: How do the poems represent race identities or issues? You can do a little research on how race is represented in literature and apply it to analyzing the poems’ representations.

Gender Identity: How do the poems represent gender identity or issues? You can do a little research on how gender is represented in literature and apply it to analyzing the poems’ representations.

On the Marx: How do the poems show a concept of Marxism? You can do a little research on Marxism and apply it to analyzing the poems’ representations.

Social Identity Theory: How do the poems show the ideas of Social Identity Theory? You can do a little research on Social Identity Theory and apply it to analyzing the poems’ representations.

Your paper should:

-have a clearly defined thesis that offers a unique insight into the poems’ meaning by directly answering the research question.

-provide points/topic sentences.

-include a clear, purposeful introduction and conclusion.
-use concrete details from the poems to support the points/topic sentences.

-focus on at least three of the elements of poetry, though you are encouraged to consider more elements to help you develop your analysis.

-use appropriate sources for the paper’s assignment and research question.

-contain an organizational pattern to coherently deliver the ideas

-contain transitions that move one idea to the next smoothly.

-be formatted according to MLA guidelines.

-demonstrate clear revision between early/sketch and final graded drafts.

-reach the required page length.

To earn an “A,”:

-complete the peer review discussion in a meaningful way, including posting the required number of responses.

-complete the post-grade revision in an attempt to improve the content and structure based on the feedback.
