Assignment Sheet ESSAY II – Film Analysis – Science Fiction

Your response is to be a 3-page (double space) analysis of one of the films we have watched for this unit: Alien; Aliens; Ad Astra; Minority Report

All films are rich with themes and applied innovative style to tell their stories. Ask yourself: what is the film about in the simplest possible terms. Then think of some key moments in the film where themes come through. Then go further and ask how the film developed those themes with imagery, camera angles, lighting. music, and dialogue. 

Guidelines

1)  I am interested in a response that focuses upon the themes and ideas in the film. You can write about characters, specific scenes, recurring imagery, visual style, camera angles, music, and dialogue to support your analysis on theme. 

2) Your first paragraph should introduce the points you will make in the paper. The body of your essay will explore those themes further. Be sure each paragraph as a central focus.  Conclude the essay with a strong paragraph reiterating your main points.

3) Proofread.  Pay attention to grammar and punctuation. Correct Mistakes.

4) Be sure to stay in the 3rd Person Tense. Avoid first person “I.”

5) I’ve posted articles on the films we watched that analyze some of the themes, you may consult these as sources.  You will find on the resources tab, the folder marked “film articles.” Be sure to cite if you consult them in your analysis.

6) Film titles should always be in italics.

7) Avoid summarizing and focus on analysis.
