Digital evidence is an important part of any criminal investigation. Researching computer records and websites that were visited can lead to a better understanding of why a certain crime was committed but this is usually done after the crime has already taken place. Given the laws relating to privacy and computer data, do you see a way in which digital evidence can be collected before a crime takes place?

Following the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. government implemented a series of laws known as the “Patriot Act.” Part of this collection of laws relates to computer crime investigation and prosecution. From what you know, do you feel the Patriot Act is effective in combating computer crimes? Why or why not? Give specific examples if possible
