UDSB The Philosophy of Socrates in The Apology Essay

1. In the Apology, Socrates uses the elenchus in the manner of a “gadfly,” to stir his fellow citizens out of their complacency and to get them to think seriously about virtue and the state of their souls. He also states that he will not stop this activity, no matter what he is offered (acquittal) or threatened with (execution). In the Crito, however, he seems to accept the fairly conventional argument made by the Laws that he has a duty to abide by the law, whether or not he likes or agrees with any particular rule or decision. Is Socrates being inconsistent? Why or why not?
