Teaching Transcultural Nursing

One of the biggest challenges in nursing education is to develop culturally sensitive graduates. Although theory and lecture are appropriate to introduce cultural issues, the application of those skills is limited by the kinds of clinical experiences and patient populations students may treat.

Instructions:

  1. Read the Teaching Transcultural Nursing Through Literature article.
  2. Answer the following questions:
    1. Did you read any of the books listed in Table 1 on page 525 of the article?
      • If so, list the books you have read.
      • If not, place those books on your to-do-list for reading.
    2. Select one question from Table 2 and answer. Share your thoughts, knowledge and experiences.

Develop your handout in such a way that it attracts the attention of the intended audience.

Health Information Patient Handout

One of the pivotal goals of consumer health literacy efforts is to design educational materials that attract as well as educate users. In this Assignment, you design a health information document on a topic that is of interest to you.

To prepare:

  • Select a health issue of interest to you.
  • Identify the audience or population that you seek to educate about this issue.
  • Search the Internet to find credible sites containing information about your selected topic.
  • Review the two health literacy websites listed in this week’s Learning Resources. Focus on strategies for presenting information.

    To complete:

  • Design an educational handout on the health issue you selected.
    • Include a cover page.
    • Include an introduction that provides:
      • An explanation of your issue and why you selected it
      • A description of the audience you are addressing
    • In the handout itself:
      • Develop your handout in such a way that it attracts the attention of the intended audience.
      • Include a description of the health issue and additional content that will enhance your message (i.e., key terms and definitions, graphics, illustrations, etc.).
      • Recommend at least five sites that provide clear, valuable, and reliable information on the topic.

Note: Remember to keep the information in your health handout and its design at the appropriate level for the audience you are seeking to inform. Submit your Assignment as a Word document.

This Assignment is due by Day 4 of this week.

  • Although the focus of this last assignment is on the handout (flyer) itself, as part of the requirements, you will provide an introduction in which you will explain the issue at hand as well as your targeted audience. You are likely to provide citations and references along that section. Thus, you will need to list those in the references list accordingly.

    To summarize:

    – APA format for cover Page, Introduction, and References list

    – Creativity and informativeness in handout

    – Meet all requirements

    – Due by Day 4 (Thursday night, 11th)

    – Handout must be in your file (no link to it), and the file must be Microsoft WORD (no PDF file).

    – The grading rubric is different for this last assignment. I suggest you have a look at it (see in Course Information); you will then know what you will be graded on.

    – Additional precisions:

    • References list = not on the flyer since it refers to your text narrative (introduction, description of your audience, etc…) = usual RL.
    • Recommended websites = intended for the flyer readers = on the flyer per se.
    • Since the flyer is about information and making sure that it addresses its purpose and reaches the intended audience, no need for APA on the flyer, just clarity, good information, and originality (nothing copied on the Web or previous works).

What do you believe are the primary advantages and disadvantages of having multiple revenue sources for health care services offered by an organization for planning and reporting purposes?

1st Assignment

What do you believe are the primary advantages and disadvantages of having multiple revenue sources for health care services offered by an organization for planning and reporting purposes?

2nd assignment

This assignment will require you to consider several influences to the budgeting process of a health care institution. Here, you will review payer mix and other influences to revenue as you consider revenue factors for the budget. Complete the following for this assignment:

  • For a health care organization of your choice (real or hypothetical), describe the type of organization, and determine the payer mix of patients served (percentage of Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, managed care, and private pay).
  • Take into consideration that reimbursement can be affected by the claims process, out-of-network payments, denials, audits, and legislation.
  • Assess the differences in health care budgeting as a result of these potential changes in the payer mix and payment methodologies as an outcome of the Affordable Care Act.
  • Take into consideration that while more patients may have insurance coverage, the out-of-pocket expenses will continue to create a potential uncollectable liability.
  • Evaluate how you would strategize to keep a balanced budget for all 12 months in a year using a flexible budget rather than a static budget, and provide rationale and justification.

The body of the resultant paper should be (5) pages and include at least 5 relevant academic or professional references published in the past 5 years.

What are the nurses’ ethical obligations after they have done everything mentioned in the text? See Chapter 2 (Garrett). Is “not wanting to rock the boat” a sufficient excuse for the administration to do nothing further?

Case One

Mary Stokes is in need of a kidney transplant, and her parents and siblings have been tested for compatibility. Her father is afraid of operations and knows that kidney trouble runs in the family. Before the test, Mary’s father tells the doctor that he does not want anyone, especially his wife, to know that he is compatible. He explains that if the family knows they will pressure him into being a donor. The father turns out to be the only one who is compatible. Mary asks the doctor, “Are you sure no one in my family is compatible?”

Is the father a patient and protected by confidentiality? Even if he is not a patient, is his explicit request, which was not refused, a protection of his confidentiality? If the matter is confidential, what can the physician say or do to protect the secret?

Case Two

Dr. Curious has a habit of wandering around the hospital and looking at the records of friends who are in the hospital. The nurses have tried to stop him, but he has retaliated by making their lives miserable and belittling them in public at every opportunity. The nursing administration has been notified but has done nothing, as it wants to avoid rocking the boat.

What are the nurses’ ethical obligations after they have done everything mentioned in the text? See Chapter 2 (Garrett). Is “not wanting to rock the boat” a sufficient excuse for the administration to do nothing further?

How do “individual patient or family needs and preferences” impact the implementation of the change?

Select a problem in nursing practice that you believe needs to be addressed and write a 6 page paper. Gather evidence on practices that will address the problem. Use the following outline to prepare for submission of the project in Week 5:

  • Identification of the problem. Why is it important? Why should there be a change?
  • Changes in practice that you are suggesting.
  • What is the evidence (research) that supports your proposed changes? (Note: use research articles for this section)
  • How do “individual patient or family needs and preferences” impact the implementation of the change?
  • How would you evaluate the change?

Reflects the role of the baccalaureate-prepared nurse in the collection of data to evaluate clinical practice changes

As discussed throughout this week, dissemination of research findings is necessary to continue to grow the knowledge base and support nurses learning from each other. With these thoughts in mind, you will create a PowerPoint presentation (5 or 6 slides) that does the following:

TOPIC- FALL PREVENTION

  • Provides a brief description of your project for others in the class
  • Describes your strategy for evaluating the anticipated change in practice
  • Reflects the role of the baccalaureate-prepared nurse in the collection of data to evaluate clinical practice changes
  • Describes how you would disseminate the results of this change in practice
