Case studies are an important learning strategy in business classes as they provide an opportunity for you to critically analyze events that have taken place in real-life businesses. This develops your critical thinking and research skills as you research the competition and industry in which your business resides with an end goal of formulating a recommendation for the challenges faced by the company.
Select one of the three case studies listed below, which can be found in your textbook. Evaluate the case of your choice, and respond to each of the questions below using both theory and practical managerial thinking as well as supporting research.
Option 1: Nike (pp. 30–31)

1. How has the industry in which Nike resides been doing over the last 5 years?
2. What are the pros, cons, and risks associated with Nike’s core marketing strategy? How have they managed to develop a strong customer relationship with their target market?
3. Who are the top three competitors of Nike, and what are their advantages/disadvantages with respect to their product/service development?
4. Looking at the competitors you discussed in question #3, what would you recommend as being the next steps for these competitors and, subsequently, the next steps for Nike to combat these competitors?

Option 2: Cisco (pp. 58–59)

1. How is building a brand in a business-to-business (B2B) context different than that of a business-to-consumer (B2C) market? How has Cisco managed to develop a strong customer relationship with their target market?

3. Who are the top three competitors of Intel, and what are their advantages/disadvantages with respect to their product/service development?
4. Evaluate Intel’s greatest risks and strengths as the industry moves out of the personal computer (PC) era. Identify the next steps that Intel needs to employ in order to maintain its competitive advantage.

In formatting your case analysis, do not use the question-and-answer format; instead, use an essay format with subheadings. Your APA-formatted case study should be a minimum of 500 words in length (not counting the title and reference pages). You are required to use a minimum of three peer-reviewed, academic sources that are no more than 5 years old (one may be your textbook). All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased material must have accompanying in-text citations.

Two Olympic gold medalists in skiing, married in 2014, Jason and LeAnn Benson opened Adventurers and Explorers (A&E) outdoor sporting store, which sells gear and clothing. The couple’s concept is different than many other sporting goods stores in that they design and sell their own lines of specialized products. LeAnn’s focus is on the design of products and Jason’s focus is on the financials. As a result, no one is worrying about the organizational policies or controls.
Jason and LeAnn encourage their employees to continue their favorite outdoor sports, from skiing to mountain climbing, white-water rafting, and so on. Employees are given two weeks of paid vacation. However, many employees were allowed to take up to two months off at half pay so they could fulfill their life-long dreams. Samantha just returned from a successful climb of Mount Everest. Beth will use her two months off to backpack around Europe. Around the office, employees joked about the “weekend flu,” taking Friday through Monday off. The office often ran below staffing levels depending on the season. In addition, because Jason and LeAnn were gold medalists, they attract more employees who are interested in skiing. The skiers want time off during peak season. This is also the peak time for A&E orders and service requests.
In the last three years, the company has grown from 30 to 100 employees. Jason and LeAnn need advice on controlling daily staffing levels so A&E meets or exceeds customer expectations for responsiveness without sacrificing company identity. Choose one of the issues facing A&E and propose a solution and rationale for your response:
Paid vacation along with the most valuable times for vacation (peak season time off).
Attendance issue: The “weekend flu” (Friday-Monday).
A&E needs to know whether customers are satisfied with their products and whether the company is responsive to those customers’ needs as outdoor enthusiasts.

2.  In covering several topics for this class, we have talked about etiological factors such as biological influences (nature) and family or environmental influences (nurture).  Choose a topic in child or adolescent development and discuss how it is influenced by both biological and environmental factors.  Include your opinion about the relative importance of these factors overall – that is, do you think more of development is driven by nature or by nurture?
3.  We have talked about a number of changes across childhood and adolescence.  Some of these changes are continuous and some are discontinuous.  Discuss an example of a topic that is a good example of continuity in development, and another topic that is a good example of discontinuity in development.
4.  What is one area of child development that you think should be studied further?  Describe an experimental research study for that topic, including who you might want to get for participants, what would be the independent variable, what would be the dependent variable, and what would be your hypothesized result. What would be one limitation of this study?
5.  Choose a topic from the bullet point list above (a different one than in question #1!) and use two theoretical frameworks (psychoanalytical, behavioral, cognitive, sociocultural) to explain why or how these developmental changes might have occurred.
