Syracuse University Youth Suicide in The Juvenile Justice System Research

1.You can choose whether to write a regular research paper or a paper in which you take a certain position and argue that your position is the correct one. Either way, be sure to include the following:

undefined

  • A description of the history of this topic – how it originated and has developed (and/or changed) over time.
  • An indication of what it is like today and what might be expected for future developments.
  • What the demographics are for those working in jobs related to it and offenders/victims utilizing it.
  • Whether you think this would be a field in which you’d like to work or a topic on which you’d like to work.

undefined

2.Formatting and Other Requirements:

undefined

  • 7-8 6-7 pages of writing (but if you do an excellent job in less than this, I won’t take off points. If you give me meaningless filler for several pages but write 6-7 pages, I will take off points). Writing literally means writing. It does NOT include pictures, graphs, quotes, Reference page, etc.
  • APA style for in-text citations and reference page
  • A reference page completed in APA style
  • Use Times New Roman 12-point font
  • Double-space your lines
  • Format the paper for 1-inch margins
  • Check grammar and spelling!!! (If you can’t be bothered to use the free version or the paid for by the college premium version of Grammarly, at least use your Word/Google Docs/Pages grammar and spelling checker!) And then proofread too!
  • NO TITLE PAGE and NO NAME on your paper anywhere (you’re turning it in on Blackboard so it will be submitted under your name. There’s no need to worry that it will somehow get mixed up with someone else’s.)

undefined

You need to use:

undefined

  • AT LEAST FIVE (5) appropriate sources
    • These include peer-reviewed journal articles (AKA scholarly or academic journals)
    • You may use a credible book if it has a firsthand account of the topic or important related information.

4.Grades:

  • Grades will be based on whether all points were addressed, how well the paper was written, and whether all other requirements (formatting, APA, references, etc.) were met.
  • Essentially, I will take the points from sections 1-3 on here and make them up into a rubric, which I will use to grade your papers.
  • The total number of points you can receive for your paper is 100.
  • If you plagiarize, expect that you will fail this assignment. Use SafeAssign to your advantage and check your percentage before the paper is due! Not sure how? Follow this link for step-by-step instructions.

undefined

5.Suggestions:

undefined

  • PROOFREAD! Read your paper out loud to give yourself a better idea of how well you have written your paper and if there are any problems.
  • Go ahead and use Grammarly. It’s easy to use and it will make your papers better.
  • Ask me questions if you have questions!

Olympic College Criminology Theories & Crimes and Punishment Discussion

Learning Objective:

To facilitate critical thinking about theoretical explanations of criminal activity, you will be analyzing a criminal case using a theory of your choice. Your job is to learn about the criminal case and to choose the theory you believe best explains the case. You will be evaluated based on the quality of your theoretical explanations as well as your ability to communicate these ideas effectively.

Criminal Case (choose one):

Michelle Carter

Lori Drew

Theory Options (choose one):

Crimes and Punishment (Beccaria)

The Criminal Man (Lombroso)

Theory of Differential Association (Sutherland and Cressey)

Social Learning Theory of Crime (Akers)

Social Structure and Anomie (Merton)

General Strain Theory (Agnew)

Social Bond Theory (Hirschi)

A General Theory of Crime (Gottfredson and Hirschi)

Instructions:

In your write up, you should provide the audience with foundational knowledge about your case. You will then utilize one theory to explain your case. To do this, you should provide a clear explanation of a theoretical concept and a clear statement of what it specifically explains. Finally, you should also identify any “lack of fit” between theory and case.

Your assignment should, at a minimum, include:

  • One paragraph covering the basic details of the criminal case.
  • One paragraph identifying and providing a basic explanation of your chosen
  • Two paragraphs clearly explaining how your theory explains the criminal case.
  • One paragraph identifying any weaknesses in your analysis (details that cannot be explained by your theory).

This is truly the bare minimum. This means that I expect most students will need to write a few more paragraphs to clearly communicate their analyses.

Other important details:

  • You must include citations in APA format. All case material and theoretical material must be cited (including material from the textbook).
  • I have included some links you may use in looking at this case. You may also choose to do further research on this case. Be sure to cite all sources used.
  • Your paper should be typed, double spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font. Please use complete sentences and proofread before submission.

Evaluation:

Your case analysis will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  1. Summary of Criminal Case
    • Clarity of case details
    • Relevance of case details
  2. Theoretical Analysis
    • Appropriateness of theoretical choice
    • Clarity of theoretical explanation
    • Strength of theoretical application
    • Identification of theoretical weaknesses in analysis
  3. Organization, Clarity, and Editing (Grammar and Spelling)
  4. Inclusion of Citations

Create an 8- to 10-page Practicum Project Proposal. It should provide a thorough explanation of the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where, and why) and H (how) in regards to your project:

  • What is the project and what do you intend to accomplish with it
  • Who will be participants in it and who will be impacted by it (stakeholders)
  • Where will the project take place
  • When will it take place
  • How will you implement the project and how will the intervention address the need

The aim of the proposal is to secure the buy-in of your project. The proposal should sell itself. The more comprehensive a plan you present in the proposal the greater the odds of buy-in. You will want to use this at your kick-off meeting to gain consensus among all stakeholders and to set the expectations and common objectives for your project.

Your final practicum proposal should contain the following elements:

  2. Table of contents
  3. Introduction
  4. Align to organization’s vision and mission statement

  15. Budget
  16. Cost-benefit analysis
  17. Identify all resources needed (tangible and intangible)
  18. Risk management plan
  19. Reference Page
  20. Appendices

Note: The expected length of the final practicum proposal document is 8 to 10 pages, not including the title and reference pages or appendices. You may incorporate some of the tools you completed in order to strengthen your proposal. All remaining work that you completed for your project should be included as appendices to the proposal.

Provide in-text citations and references for all sources cited.

Format your paper, including the reference page, according to APA guidelines.
