Core Concepts Social Deviance and Social Control Paper

  1. Select a form of deviance for your topic in this paper. Keep in mind that social deviance is not necessarily crime and can include characteristics and beliefs or opinions as well as behavior. Also keep in mind that social deviance may be socially desirable, such as great intelligence.
  2. Write a 2- to 3-page paper (about 750 words) describing the behavior, belief or opinion, or characteristic that you have selected. Describe what social norm it breaks and the consequences incurred when the deviance becomes known to official agents of social control as well as to social equals. Then consider the following questions:
    1. Applying Emile Durkheim’s functionalist analysis of social deviance, how is this form of deviance functional and how is it dysfunctional for society as a whole and for particular subcultures involved or affected
    2. How does the essence of social control vary depending upon characteristics of the deviant, of the victim if there is one, of the situation and/or the historical era?
    3. If there are other mitigating factors that affect perceptions and reactions, what are they?
  3. Save your answers in a Word document.
  4. Cite any sources, including assigned readings, according to APA citation guidelines.
  5. Submit your assignment. Your work will automatically be checked by Turnitin.
  6. Review your Submission Details and access your Turnitin report. Revise your work as needed based on the feedback.
  7. By the due date indicated, re-submit the final version of your work.

Rowan Cabarrus Community College Social Deviance and Social Control Discussion

All of the readings assigned in this module relate to social deviance and social control, although the specific focus of each varies. The first selection is Durkheim’s seminal writing from over 100 years ago that analyzes the role of crime in healthy societies. The Chambliss article is a classic study on the impact of labeling and the concept of the self-fulling prophecy in understanding deviant behavior among two groups of male high school students. The article by Loe reflects the trend of medicalization of deviance today and explores how prescriptions drugs are becoming a normalized part of student life. The Lopez et.al. article gives an analysis of two types of harassment in the workplace and the types of social control that are used to address the deviance. The final article, by Gottschalk and Gunnesdal, considers the challenges of defining white collar crime and implications for research.

In all of these articles we learn that labeling deviant behavior and socially acceptable behavior occurs in a variety of places. It occurs at the social or cultural level by law-making bodies, and it occurs at the interpersonal level when law enforcement officers decide who will be officially handled and who will be treated as if they were conforming. Labeling can even occur on a case-by-case basis when students or business people decide whether or not cultural definitions of rule-breaking apply to a particular situation.

Obviously, some definitions of behavior carry more weight, such as laws being more powerful than our personal definitions of behavior as deviant or acceptable. A theme that runs through all of these articles is the fact that virtually nothing in this world is inherently deviant (two acts come close to being inherently deviant; all cultures have an incest taboo and no culture condones cold-blooded murder). Rather, deviance is deviance because we say it is at a particular place and time.

Stanford Prison Experiment Sociological Perspective Paper

This is not a powerpoint I chose to do a paper.

  1. If you have your own idea for an artifact (other than the ones listed in the assignment or provided by your professor), you must gain advanced approval from your professor.
  2. Read download(your professor may provide you with additional choices).
  3. Review your notes and assignments from any past course modules.
  4. Choose a book, movie, or TV show, and illustrate in a 5-minute presentation how concepts or themes covered in a particular module of the course are illustrated in your book, movie, or TV show.
    • You do not have to choose to illustrate concepts from the module in which you present.
    • You may use PowerPoint or any other electronic visual aids to illustrate your presentation.
    • You should include a short synopsis of the movie, book, or TV show (less than 2 minutes, which will not count toward your 5-minute presentation) in case your classmates are unfamiliar with your choice.
    • If you are able to show short clips (if applicable) of the artifact, please do so.
  5. Submit your presentation to your professor at least 24 hours before your presentation.
  6. During your scheduled time slot, give your 5-minute presentation.
    • You must have access to your PowerPoint slides at the computer from which you will be presenting.
    • If you have additional resources, make sure that you can access and share them easily before attending your session.
    • You may practice sharing your material at your professor’s virtual office hours. At the virtual office hours session, your professor will grant you moderator privilege, so you can upload slides and practice sharing other visuals if necessary.
