Annotated Bibliography
Length: 4-6 sources

Once you choose a topic (we will discuss potential topics in class), you should provide 1-2 paragraphs on each academic source you cite following MLA guidelines. After a brief summary, assess the source and offer some criticism of it. Does it seem like a reliable and current source? Why? Is the research biased or objective? Are the facts well documented? Who is the author? And, most importantly, how does this source speak to, connect with or contradict another source you are working with?

(Another option) You could also consider making connections between the texts you cite, bringing in direct quotes and analyzing them. This will provide material you can use for your research paper.

Points to keep in mind:

  • All entries are alphabetized by the first word in the bibliographic entry.
  • You are drafting a critical bibliography where you provide a descriptive annotation, and you evaluate the success or reliability of the book, web page, or article.

Sample Annotation –

Last Name, First Name. Title of a Book With One Author, Title Underlined or Italicized, With Significant Words Capitalized. Publisher, Year of Publication.

Highlight this passage and replace it with your annotation. In a descriptive annotation, you merely describe what the book, web page, or article is about. In a critical bibliography, you provide a descriptive annotation, and you evaluate the success or reliability of the book, web page, or article. You might also compare or contrast the source with another source on the topic. Notice that in this template, the annotation is indented and single spaced.
