Goal: Presentation with six (6) slides PowerPoint slides over your report
(No more than 6 slides and no less than 6 slides.)
Audience: Class members, slides visible in average classroom
Content of speech and slides = the content of your report for a new audience
Slide one: Title page slide
Speech under slide: Introduce yourself and the presentation
Slide two: Issue warranting research
Speech under slide: background / problem/issue
Slides three, four, five: Significant findings, charts, photos
Speech under slide: Reconstruct visuals for slide presentation; don’t include the same graphic you put in the paper unless it will be highly effective.
Slide six: Conclusions arrived at through your research
Speech under slide: Review topic and recommendation and any follow—up info about audience for the report
———————————–
Slide notes: In the notes space under each new slide, put the speech
that would accompany the slides.
Tips on Constructing Slides:
• Demonstrate awareness of document design elements, design principles, the impact of font,
color, etc.
Balance Alignment Grouping Consistency Contrast
• Creating slides is like writing poetry—every word counts. Say the most with the least number of words!
• Pay attention to the font size, font style and placement of text.
• Colors and slide design should be appropriate for the topic.
• This assignment embodies everything you have learned in the course.
Demonstrate master of technical writing and document design.
DO NOT USE SENTENCES OR PARAGRAPHS ON THE SLIDES!
DO NOT PRESENT ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR RESEARCH PROCESS OR ADVICE FOR FUTURE STUDENTS. In previous assignments, I have asked students to talk about the ups and downs of their research process and give advice to future students. The advice is always the same: DON’T PROCRASTINATE! So now you know that and we are no longer going to put that on the slides.
PAY ATTENTION TO LAYOUT! Don’t have every slide aligned on the left just because the slide template has it that way. Use your layout skills to move things for the most effective layout.
DON’T USE A SERIF FONT ON A SLIDE, regardless of what the slide template wants. Serif fonts are for printed material.
EDIT YOUR SLIDES! For Pete’s sake, don’t have a misspelled word on a slide. It’s like telling the world that you are dumb and lazy.
DON’T FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR GRAPHICS OR PHOTOS. No matter how great that chart was in your report, people may not be able to see it on a slide. Change the format of the information so that the audience can see it. Also, make sure you have enough contrast between text and background. Don’t put plain white or black text on a grey background. At least, make it bold.
Good vs Poor Slides
Good slides are visible to everyone in the audience, appropriate to the topic and situation; and like any visual aid, they should support the main presentation. They are not the main event themselves. They are attractive but simple enough not to divert too much attention from the speech. They are also used sparingly, and integrated into the speech, just as you would any visual aid.
Poor slides are wordy, which makes them hard to see. They have too many distracting elements, like animation, multiple colors, and sound. A poor slide presentation puts too much emphasis on the slides, letting them control the presentation. This type of presentation also rarely integrates the slides into the speech; it’s more of a running commentary on the slides. Neither you nor your audience should continually look at the slides.
WARNING: DO NOT TAKE THIS ASSIGNMENT LIGHTLY.
YOU MUST DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF LAYOUT, FORMATTING, AUDIENCE, DOCUMENT DESIGN, AND PRECISE CONTENT.
DO NOT USE SENTENCES OR PARAGRAPHS ON THE SLIDES!
