Residency Project Paper – Team Research Instructions
ISOL-534 with Dr. Morga

Hello ISOL-534 Students, I would like to take some time to introduce the Residency Project Paper. For the 16-week hybrid courses here at the University of the Cumberlands, you are required to attend a residency weekend which I have indicated on the course calendar in the classroom. We will all get to meet each other at the residency weekend, which I hope you will find to be a rewarding social and educational experience. As such, the University requires that at least 60% of your final grade is based on assignments, attendance, and student activities that are related to the residency weekend. To that end, you will all be grouped into teams and each team will work collaboratively on one research paper.
Teams: Based on the size of the class (or classes), Project Teams are usually between 4-8 students.
Components: Each Residency Project Paper will require that several parts be submitted in whole.

  • PART 1: INTRODUCTION – Your team must write an introduction section that introduces your topic – 500 to 800 words
  • PART 2: HISTORY – Your team must write a history section. How did your research topic come to be over time? When was it introduced? What social shortcoming did it resolve? Why did it become popular or trendy? – 750 to 1000 words
  • PART 3: ADVANCEMENTS and FAILURES – How did the first versions or early adopters perform? What portions of your subject did well? What failed? What aspects have been added over time? What has been eliminated? – 750 to 1000 words
  • PART 4: FINAL CONCLUSION – Do you think your subject topic will grow? Do you think it will become obsolete? Why? What do you see as the future of your topic: Do you have any other recommendations? Will it be replaced? – 500 to 800 words
  • PART 5: Accompanying PowerPoint presentation – your team will have a maximum of 20 minutes to present a PowerPoint presentation of your project. You must have a minimum of 5 slides but no more than 10 slides. The presentation should be interesting, brief, and informative – just the facts, no fluff or extra verbiage. Think of your presentation as a movie trailer. Short and to-the-point.
  • APA format & References Page – a minimum of FIVE solid references. Your team’s research paper is to be written in complete and clean APA format. Your references do NOT have to be scholarly references. They can be commercial media references, but should be from professional organizations or magazine articles. NO WIKIPEDIA.
  • The INTRO, HISTORY, and ADVANCEMENTS/FAILURES sections will be due throughout the course BEFORE the Residency. Your Team will collectively assemble all of the written sections, adding the Conclusion and the References Page as ONE RESEARCH PAPER for the Team and submit it on SUNDAY of the residency weekend.

Topics: The paper topics for the residency weekend. All of these topics bridge the two constantly interwoven worlds of software development and system security. Your team must agree on ONE topic.

  • Medical or Healthcare IoT devices. Concerns about security, data exchange, storage, infrastructure costs, and lack of regulations impact connected healthcare. Yet, the IoT healthcare industry is on the rise. Do you believe that need for healthcare IoT devices will continue to grow despite many drawbacks?
  • Ethical Hackers. Ethical Hackers perform the same security breach activities as criminal hackers. However, they have the permission to hack an organization’s network in order to perform tests that keep it safe from illegal hacking. Do you think this is a good idea? Are we really keeping our digital world safe? Or are we training new potential criminals that could “turn to the dark side” should they become disgruntled in their lives or careers? Have there been cases of Ethical Hackers that turned rogue?
  • Personal Smart Watch Design – there are some design capabilities for owners of Apple watches, but the real design culture for smart watches exits in the android world. Write about why Android Ware smart watch design has become so popular. Visit the websites of some of the largest watch design platforms in the world where users can customize the dial design of their own smart watches: FACER (https://facer.io) WATCHMAKER (https://getwatchmaker.com) and PUJIEBLACK (https://pujieblack.com/). Determine why these platforms are so popular, how they got started, what problems they’ve had, how they’ve maintained their success. As IoT devices, do smart watches present a security concern over your WiFi while wearing them in your house? (personally Dr. Morga is a Facer Premium Designer (http://morga.io)
  • Self-Driving Cars: Autonomous vehicles require incredible data processing capabilities and system speeds needed to mimic the timing of human reflexes. Companies like Ouster are developing light imaging, detection, and ranging applications that are the key to standard improvements like lane control and adaptive cruise control. But are also turning fully autonomous vehicles into mobile data centers, allowing driverless cars to make real-time, complex decisions. Is this a good thing? Will society ultimately benefit from these technologies? Or will this trend put hundreds of thousands of Americans out of work who drive for a living?
  • DAW Applications: Digital Audio Workstation software… there are lots of them. Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Cubase, Reason, and FL Studio just to name a few. Why are these software applications so popular for creating and producing music? How did they get started. While the MIDI data protocol has its roots in the 1980’s, is it still popular today? (personally Dr. Morga is a Reason user)
  • BYOD: Bring Your Own Device to work is a trend that has been around for a few years now. Has it improved? Have the risks increased. How have corporate BYOD policies changed or improved over these few years. Has security in personal devices increased corporate security? Or have these devices created more headaches for the IT department? How has the growth of Mobile Device Management helped control these devices?

Delivery: Your team’s paper will not be entirely written at the Residency Weekend. Some of the sections will be due before the weekend. Make sure to review the due dates in the Syllabus and on the Course Calendar. The timeline is typically as follows:
Week 1 – Team assignments. You will be placed on a team and notified.
Week 2 – declare your paper’s topic from the five topics above. On the discussions page you will find a Topic Discussion. Everyone on the team must post in the Topic Discussion as a commitment to the topic you have chosen.
Week 3 – Your team will write the Introduction section of the paper and submit it for grading. You decide among your teammates how the writing will take place and how it will be compiled, but only one person must submit the Introduction section of the paper for grading. Everyone in the group gets the same grade.
The remaining schedule then could vary based on what week the residency weekend lands in, but typically proceeds as follows:
After the Introduction: Your team will write the History section of the paper and submit it for grading. You decide among your teammates how the writing will take place and how it will be compiled, but only one person must submit the History section of the paper for grading. Everyone in the group gets the same grade.
After the History: Your team will write the Advancements & Failures section of the paper and submit it for grading. You decide among your teammates how the writing will take place and how it will be compiled, but only one person must submit the Advancements/Failures section of the paper for grading. Everyone in the group gets the same grade.
After the advancements & Failures: Your team will write the final Conclusion section of the paper. Then, your team will assemble the entire paper – all four sections – into one final Research Paper. You decide among your teammates how the writing will take place and how it will be compiled, but only one person must submit the ENTIRE PAPER, including the reference page, for grading. Everyone in the group gets the same grade.
Residency Weekend Presentation: Before the Residency Weekend, your team will start to assemble a Presentation of your paper’s Topic. It should basically be an overview of your Project Paper. Then, at the Residency Weekend, your team can practice the presentation which will be presented on Sunday. You decide among your teammates how PowerPoint deck gets assembled. Everyone on the Team should do some of the talking during the presentation. Only one person must submit the PowerPoint deck for grading. Everyone in the group gets the same grade.
Please NOTE: Every term can see the residency weekend fall in different weeks. Some terms, it’s Week 6, or Week 8, or Week 9. During the residency weekend:

  • There will always be at least one section of the residency paper completed
  • The team presentation will be conducted on the Sunday of the weekend
  • You will write the Practical Connections Paper
