  2. A critical component of deciphering potential problems and beginning a research project is to gain a variety of perspectives about the issue. One way is to gather clues about it using tools such as Google Trends

3. The next step is to discuss your ideas with colleagues to get additional perspectives. This helps us get into a more clear mind about the issue at hand as well as brainstorm additional methods. Take some time to discuss with your collaborators these potential questions…

  • Who is the systemic “owner” of this problem/issue? Who will it benefit (company, department, customers, society)?
  • Who is the systemic “decision-maker” of this problem/issue? Who is paying/requesting for this research to be done and will be making decisions on the outcome of this research?
  • What are the potential problems/issues effects on the potential participants?
  • Think about bias – whose problem is it really?
  • What will the cost of this outcome be?
  1. After discussing your ideas, draft a research objective statement using the “recipe” above. (Follow the same sentence structure as the recipe).
  2. Write a short description of your specific scenario and the ‘symptoms’ and/or ‘problems.’
  3. Add justification of how you think each ingredient will support an answer to the issue.
