Writing Homework Help
ECE 335 Ashford University Hula Hoopin Queen by Thelma Godin Book Report
As the diversity of our nation increases, so will the diversity in our classrooms. Literature is one way that teachers can help to ensure their students understand different cultures around them.
To prepare for this assignment,
- Read Chapter 2 of the course text.
- Note Section 2.4 of our textbook lists the following guidelines for evaluating diversity in children’s books:
- Accurate representation of cultural specifics
- Avoidance of stereotypes
- Achievement
- Author/illustrator
- Copyright date
- Sensibility
- Language
For this discussion, you will be assigned a multicultural children’s book to evaluate, based on your birth month. By clicking each book title, you will be linked to a read aloud video of that specific book. The videos provide a way for you to evaluate the content of the book, but you will need to further research your book to find information about the author, illustrator, and copyright date.
Your assigned book is based on your birth month. Look for your birth month to find your assigned book:
- April: Discuss Thelma Lynne Godin’s book after viewing The Hula-Hoopin’ Queen Read by Oprah Winfrey (Links to an external site.).
Initial Post: Due by Day 3. After viewing the video “read aloud” of your assigned multicultural children’s book, discuss whether each guideline from Section 2.4 of your textbook is addressed. If specific guidelines are not addressed, share how you think the book could be modified to include all guidelines for evaluating diversity in children’s books. If you need extra support with understanding the guidelines shared in the text, make sure to read this week’s guidance (250 to 300 words).
Guided Response: Due by Day 7. Review at least three of your classmates’ posts. Pretend you just finished observing your classmate using this book during a reading lesson. Discuss one way this book stood out as a quality multicultural book. Is this book a must-have for your own classroom library? Explain why or why not. Ask your peer one follow-up question (50 to100 words each).
Final Post: Due by Day 7. For your final post, you are to find a second book. This book should be the opposite of the book you evaluated in your initial post by being one that does not represent cultural diversity. In fact, you might choose a book that includes biased information or stereotypes. Using Section 2.4 of your course text, note how some or maybe even all of the guidelines are not met. In this final post, also answer any questions others have asked of you (100 to 200 words).
