Gender Role Stereotypes
A stereotype is a preconceived notion, especially about a group of people. Many stereotypes are racist, sexist, or homophobic. Stereotypes include ideas about what is and is not male or female. The stereotypical feminine role includes such traits as gentleness, dependency, kindness, helpfulness, patience, and submissiveness. The stereotypical male role includes such traits as toughness, protectiveness, independence, and competitiveness.
Gender Roles are culturally determined patterns of behaviors seen as appropriate that societies prescribe to the sexes. In other words, ways in which males and females are expected to behave within a given culture or society.

Answer the following questions expressing your own thoughts and opinions. Utilize a reference to support your stance. Reflect, Reveal, Explain, Support, or Debate…express yourself with as much precision as possible as you discuss the following: a reference other than the textbook for this course is required for this assignment, (adhering to the designated reference format I provided you with located in my syllabus):
- How important is it for men and women to adhere to gender role stereotypes?
- Would violating gender role stereotypes lead to bullying, teasing, or stares from others?
- How should rude and discriminatory behavior be handled:
- by peers
- by adults
- by parents?
- If you are female identified, would you date a male who has “effeminate” qualities? If you are male identified, would you date a female who has “masculine” qualities? If you are attracted to same sex people what qualities should they possess? Why or why not?
- A “man” goes to work wearing makeup and was told to take it off or get fired. Is it okay for men to express their style and individuality at work as they see fit?
