New York University System Based Approach Discussion Paper
System Based Approach
A system-based approach focuses on viewing the system’s overall structure from a broad perspective, which includes the systems configurations and sequences, rather than looking at the issues from a narrow or specific point of view. This broad perspective allows the public health leaders to develop adequate skills to take the initiative and lead in a culturally and economically diverse community. Furthermore, the positive factor about using a system-based approach is it increases productivity, can be cost-saving, requires communication, and engagement. The system-based approach is comprised of four elements, and they are people, systems, design, and risk. The people factor focuses on the interaction among people working together to complete a task. The system factor focuses on addressing any complex issues that might arrive during the task, and the design factor focuses on identifying the problems and finding a solution. Lastly, the risk factor focuses on identifying what issues can arise and therefore addressing such issues through identification, assessment, and management (Clarkson et al., 2018).
Strengths
The system-based approach helps to bridge the gaps in providing public health services. Therefore, an example of how my organization uses the system-based approach to inform public health practice is by promoting awareness and allowing individuals to understand the elements, such as economic, social (racial & socioeconomic factors), and physical (environmental) factors that influence health outcomes; thereby creating a collaborative relationship to create an effective and successful solutions outcome. The strength of this actions is that it bridges the gaps where once an individual becomes aware of others’ cultural and economic background and learn how it can influence their health, such as health and socioeconomic disparities, it will be easier to create and implement a solution. Furthermore, using the system-based approach as a practical road map to bridge the gaps in providing necessary public health services can also include solutions, such as cultural competency training and creating resources that allow access to healthcare services (Clarkson et al., 2018).
Weakness
However, although the system-based approaches focus more on using a broad perspective, this factor can inhibit the interpersonal aspect of health and negatively impact the individual. For example, everyone is unique and requires looking at these individuals from a specific point of view to identify the health issues and other factors and find solutions. Therefore, a balance for a personal holistic approach to transforming the communities is essential (Clarkson et al., 2018).
