You have learned from the two lectures and our reading for Wednesday about deductive, inductive, and abductive arguments—three forms that arguments may take. Go to the New York Times‘s “Room for Debate,” a forum that the paper hosted from 2009 through 2017. (The “Santa argument” in our reading comes from a 2009 forum.) Choose one person’s argument in one forum; there are sixty-three pages of forums for you to choose from. (Don’t choose Bruce Henderson’s Santa argument!) Explain the argument you have chosen. What is it trying to establish? Also, is the argument deductive, inductive, or abductive in form? Is it valid? Does it seem sound? Give your reasons for your answers, which is to say for thinking what you do. (By the way, if the NYT site asks you to log on, clear your history and then go to the site again.)
