These are my professor’s instructions on what needs to be done for the paper. A 4-6 page history of cruel and unusual punishment from Spain to England to America until the creation of the 8th Amendment. It must include at least TEN detailed descriptions of tortures and devices used. The paper must also include a deep analysis of how the U.S. Supreme Court’s position on cruel and unusual punishment has evolved to the modern day. This must include a full analysis of TEN cases under the 8th Amendment NOT FROM THE TEXT BOOK. These cases must not be in brief form but discussed in terms of their meaning, reasoning and effect on American policy. These cases range from methods for the death penalty down to not allowing smoking in prison.

When I say cases I mean Supreme Court opinions that made changes and clarifications to what is and what is not legal punishment under the 8th Amendment.

Including restrictions on who can be put to death, treatment of prisoners, forms of execution, ages and mental states of those to be put to death.
