Class pets are common in schools throughout the U.S. and in other countries. However, they should be more common. The fact is pets help kids in lots of ways particularly with teaching empathy. One study found that kids who engage with pets are far more empathetic as adults than adults who never had that interaction. If you’ve had a pet, you understand this. You talk to your pet. Kids with a class pet do the same, and that makes them more empathetic. Pets are also really caring, contrary to what many people think about animals being inferior.

A lot of families are poor. That’s another reason that lunches should be free. Kids go to school hungry, and they can’t learn. The brain needs glucose in order to undertake certain cellular functions. 1 in 6 kids suffer from hunger. So, these kids probably can’t buy a lunch at school. Even though lunches can be cheap, like one or two dollars, it’s a lot if you have no money. How can a kid sit in class and learn when he/she is hungry? Learning cannot take place if the brain is starved. It’s only fair too that everyone have food to eat.
