Urban planning is a crucial and needed occupation because of the safety it provides society in urbanized areas, especially in the United States of America. Urban planning is necessary to “maintain that life safety welfare balance” (Salisbury, 2019) in the more populated states in the United States like New York. Balancing that welfare means placing certain societal needs strategically in order to promote the safest and most logical choices for people- these choices can include where to place a landfill, school, or even where to place emergency exits in buildings. Planning strategically is important because every choice a planner makes has an opportunity cost, which means with placing a school in an area the planner loses the option of putting something else in that area. Without urban planning, cities are at risk of disease, accidents, and death. Furthermore, urbanization in the U.S caused the need for planning because urbanization is a catalyst for an increase in population. Wherever industries centralize, people tend to follow because people need jobs, which means places like New York that provide industries with cheaper transportation options, are hot spots for urbanization.
