For this module activity, you will write an analysis of a short story, including your interpretation of the story’s meaning, as well as relating the story’s meaning to your overall exploration of the humanities. These writings are not merely reflective exercises. Research and writing about the deeper meaning of the story is required. Although you may be creative, you will also have to demonstrate that you are engaging with the course materials and demonstrating academic research following proper citation procedures.For your analysis, read some of the short stories from the following link and select ONE story to write about: http://americanliterature.com/twenty-great-american-short-stories. After you have selected and carefully read a chosen short story from the link, do some research by finding at least two scholarly articles about the short story and integrate what you learned from them in your analysis. Try the SPC Library data base, Google Scholar, or search for professional critical reviews.

Avoid sources that focus solely on summaries of any kind (summaries are not research). This includes (but not limited to) Wikipedia, CliffsNotes, SparkNotes, Prezi presentations, etc. Let’s face it, it’s a short story; reading a summary of a short story can sometimes be longer than the short story itself! 

When you’ve completed all of this, write your analysis and make sure to include the following:

Title of the story, author, date of publication

Basic plot (shouldn’t take any more than a few sentences)

Explain the ultimate meaning of the story. Provide as many examples as possible. Please note that this is your “interpretation” of the many possible meanings that the author is trying to convey. This is a point over which reasonable people may disagree. How does your research of the story compare to your own interpretation?

1. Explain how your interpretation of the story (and the story itself) teaches us something useful as human being.
