Week 5 Discussion
This week, we learned about the traditions of Roman art. In what ways did Roman art continue Greek traditions and in what ways did it diverge from them?
Veristic portraiture presented a new ideal, one based on age and wisdom rather than youth and physical beauty. Like the portrait busts of patricians or the double portrait of a Roman husband and wife, we continue to present ourselves in carefully curated ways today. What features and attributes do we emphasize to convey certain ideals about ourselves in the 2st century? What do we value about the “self” and how and where do we express these values?
Having read Livy’s preface to his History of Rome (and perhaps having read additional passages as well) how would you compare his approach to that of Herodotus?
We encountered a number of monuments and portraits of leaders in our look at ancient Roman art. Some of these depictions were veristic, some classicizing, and others were even abstract. How have rulers throughout modern history been depicted in art and which techniques or methods have been carried over from Roman tradition and applied to rulers of the past two hundred years?
