Research Project: “Geography of Food”
Required Viewing: Netflix Series “Cooked”
Required: Project Proposal Submission: select a country, city, region of interest and submit this
on the D2L Research Project Proposal board.
Project Paper:
1) Country: Choose a country, city, or region of interest to begin your exploration into the
Geography of Food.
• Include reason(s) for the country, city, region chosen?
2) Maps: Describe the relative location and include a map of the area researched
3) Perceptions: Recount your initial perceptions prior to research (at the time of proposal)
4) Insight(s): Report interesting insight(s) gained during analysis (limited to 1 or 2) – this is an
exercise to compare before and after impressions of your researched topic.
5) What is the principle Staple?
• Are the staple foods ‘native’ to the country, city, region, or ‘introduced’ – how/why?
Example: potatoes are not endemic to Europe, and tomatoes are not native to Italy.
6) Food (staple) Economy
• Does the principle staple food contribute to an “export” economy?
• Does your country, city, region depend on “imports” of staples?
7) Food (staple) Commodity Trail – tell the “field or sea-to-table” story
• Subsistence economy: Locally grown and consumed? Locally traded?
• Global economy (distribution networks: how does food travel and where to)?
8) Impacts of Climate Change on food production
• What are the impacts (or potential impacts) a changing climate may have on food
production and the overall impact that will have on both social and economic scales?
9) Final Analysis – What is the overall relationship between humans and our environment
when we analyze the “Geography of Food.”
