• Did this video change your opinion on suicide?
The video did not change my opinion about suicide. I read and heard a lot about people who committed
suicide. I never forgot when my cousin, who is suffering from bipolar, left my house to smoke a cigarette
after a regular conversation. He acted differently after he came back, and after a short time, started to cry
and ask for help. He said he took many pills because he wanted to kill himself, but he changed his mind.
There are two facts behind my cousin’s story and most suicidal action. First, their symptoms are not easy
to recognize for regular people. Most parents or family members said their loved one was not acting sad
or was not talking about the suicidal ideation before committing it. Second, most of the survivors explain
how they got regretted their actions right after they committed.
• What did the video teach you about suicide?
I like his story, how he survived, and how he started to fight with all those problems while he still suffers
from them. I think his father and the strong relationship he made between himself and his stepson played
an essential role in overcoming those difficulties. Mitchell et al. (2005) explained protective factors could
increase or decrease a person’s risk level. For example, if the person does not have a strong social and
family support network, their risk may be higher for suicide.
• When completing an initial assessment for a client with suicidal ideation, what are the most
important pieces of information that should be captured?
The idea of suicide refers to suicidal ideation, from wishing to die through suicide. Several risk factors,
such as age and history of previous suicide attempts, have been identified. According to Montemarano et
al. (2018), identifying the psychological causes of suicidal behaviors and suicidal ideation would lead
health professionals to recognize and better assist at-risk individuals. Depression, hopelessness, and
psychological pain are three psychological factors that are reliably associated with suicide ideation. Also,
environmental factors, such as recent loss, lack of social support, unemployment, critical life events, and
family history of depression or suicide, and behavioral factors, such as unexplained behavioral and
lifestyle changes, would increase suicide risks (Videbeck, 2020). When healthcare staff assists clients
with these criteria, they should be aware and act with more precautions. Listening without interruption
and showing empathy helps a suicidal person be open and admit his/her need for help. Therapeutic
communication is very crucial to suicidal people. Another important piece of information for suicidal
patients is to inform them that a suicide prevention group is willing to help anyone, and they can be
reached by phone call anytime. People who had similar experiences and can understand the difficulties
the person is going through. Therefore, the suicidal person can get assistance and overcome the mental
struggles in his/her life. Further, acutely suicidal individuals may report to the emergency department for
crisis intervention. The staff must know how to properly assess the patient’s lethality level and manage
