Managers achieve goals by working and interacting with people in order to motivate them. They also inspire a shared vision and appeal to people’s values and motivate them to care about the corporate goals or an important mission.

Review the “Penelope at Work – A Lesson on Professionalism” video in your lecture and discuss the following:

  • In your opinion, did Penelope’s boss manage the situation effectively? What would you have done the same or different?
  • In what ways did Penelope violate professional etiquette and why? Why is professionalism important in the workplace?
  • How do you think a manager can motivate someone like Penelope to care more about the company mission and goals?

Remember to be specific! Then provide thoughts and feedback on one other student’s post. How were your thoughts and ideas similar or different? Is there any new information that you can share with them or a resource that you can route them to?

In your opinion, did Penelope’s boss manage the situation effectively? What would you have done the same or different?

In my opinion, I think Penelope’s boss handled the situation effectively and calm. He was very professional and genuine when talking to her about issues involving her. He did not wait to bring up the issues. As soon as he saw Penelope, he took manners right away. I would have handled the situation the same way, but I would have been a little more strict and set boundaries more clear, as getting written up or getting let go if she did not adhere to what I was changing especially since she was not being polite and seemed very uninterested as if she was the boss of herself.

In what ways did Penelope violate professional etiquette and why? Why is professionalism important in the workplace?

Penelope violated professional etiquette first by wearing pajamas to work. That is very unprofessional and breaking etiquette of dress code. She also had no matters when eating her gum, sucker and speaking to her boss. She was an hour late to work because she stopped for coffee and missed an important marketing meeting. Penelope called her boss “dude”, called in sick the past few days because of having bronchitis, then faked coughed when he asked, and making fun of other employees like Peacock for having a “shaved head”. She violated numerous professional etiquettes such as interrupting, not watching her language, not being respectful to coworkers, gossiping, being late, not dressing appropriately, getting people at work, skipping meetings, not making proper eye contact and staying accountable.

Professionalism is important in the workplace because it is the way a person conducts themself at work to represent both them and their company in a positive way. It is one of the biggest factors in your level of career success. It can make or break your career. Without having professionalism, you will never be taken seriously and might be looked over. It can cost your job or promotion, and put you first in line for a layoff. It is an outward display of your attitude toward you job and your company. Its a sign of loyalty, dependability and responsibility.

How do you think a manager can motivate someone like Penelope to care more about the company mission and goals?

I think it will be very difficult to motivate someone like Penelope, because you can’t make people care, but you can provide all the right elements that inspire them, so I do think it can happen. I think recognizing Penelope and offering rewards for good work can be a start to make Penelope feel appreciated, pushing her to continue working hard. Also, I think the manager can start an incentive program, such as giving a gift card or an employee of the month day-off pay can motivate Penelope to care more about the company mission and goals.
